played in support of the minor hockey night program will get under way at 530 pm karen lewis who started figure skating lessons thirteen years ago to keep neat and trim has discovered theres more to the sport than just pleasure she has found that in the last decade a lot of satisfaction has come from being able to figure skate properly and even moit- satisfaction from teaching oth ers how to do it such is miss lewis task this season at the markham arena she is one of three intruders hired bv the markham figure skating club to teach children the fundamentals of the sport she has about 50 children tak ing lessons from her markham requires two days of her time and to fill the test of the week karen teaches at the tamoshanler in agin- court here she instructs nearly 200 youngsters and is assisted by seven other instructors karens figure skating story started back in 1951 when she enrolled at the stouffville fig ure skating ciub under the cab- able directions of christine ken nedy- four veais after starting in stouffville karen transferred her lessors to newmarket she was there two years before moving to the irionville club that was in 1d5s now seven years later karen is still learn ing at unionville under her teacher bruce hyland its a ease of teacher teachins teacher karen chose to study dances in her figure skating career and is now working on tiie utimate aim in this course the gold medal she has also passed a few figure tests enough to i qualify her as a teacher taught in maritime last vason 396363 karen heard about a figure sk3ttng club in moneton new bruns wick that was seeking the serv- ices of an ontario pro with opportunity knocking before her karen packed her bags and headed for tiie east coast not only did sne get to teach at moneton but also rendered her services in st andrews bv the sea and three clubs in prince edward isiaud the young lady returned to ontario after six months of in structing in the maritimes her f plans indefinite karen decided the tamoshanter one afternoon when one of the officials asked her if she would like the job of instructing she readiiy accepted it was exactlv the same story at the markham arena and the 23 year old girl had her winters work cut out for her site teaches for 15 hours a week giving eight hours to the agincourt club and the remain der to markham she takes les- sos on her day off i karen likes her job as a fig ure skating teacher i wouldnt be in it if i did nt she smiled but its hectic at times and it can get you down she ad ded markham carnival karens efforts at markham will come to a climax april 3rd when the club presents its fust carnival a full cast from tod dlers right up to karen herself will partake in the colourful event she is somewhat concerned with the outcome of the event she realizes that if the carnival is a success then the club will profit therefore karen and her two fellow instructors peggy jakeman and karl benzing have been going full steam for tiie last six weeks in order to shape up the program for ihe public she puts her students through two vigorous practises a week and in her spare time must fit music to go with eight numbers the hard part of the carni val is picking the music to fit the skaters karen said one of her musical choices was the theme from the ad- dams family a catchy instr- mental number that would make anyone listen in the winter karen finds lit tle time for other activities and any spare time she does have she uses for sewing karen is an avid hockey fan and attended as many games as her schedule would permit in the summer karen enjoys swimming she also makes it a point to catch lip in her social activities karen attended stouffville district high school and was in its not as simple as most grade 13 when she left her people thinr plans before she became a pro j skater were to study physio- therapy if i ever get tired of my job i may still make it karen said karen explained that teaching is not an easy job and advises that a person thinking about such a career should know what he or she is getting into she warned karen at 23 is the baby ot the lewis family she has two older brothers ian of stouffville and gary of toronto anniversary track meet at cleveland on friday the competition was held in the cleveland sports arena be fore 10000 spectators teds mens wear special offer on mens stanfield underwear briefs and tops 3 for s or mt each a fourgoal splurge late in the second period enabled ring- wood to break a 44 deadlock and go on to defeat ajax 96 in the first game of the com munity league finals friday night at the arena it was a seesaw battle throughout the first period and into the second until ringwood popped in four quick goals in the space of less than four mi nutes two of those goals were scored on power plays ajax took the lead in the early minutes of the first pe riod but trailed 21 at the end of twenty minutes ringwood fired six goals in the second pe riod while ajax only managed three the winners added ano ther in the final frame then withstood two ajax goals to hold their lead larry brown ross madill and doug melnnis each fired a pair of goals for ringwood while barry mclean ron guy and don hramon rounded out the scoring with singles in ad dition to his two goals larry brown assisted on three others for a five point night john ellis and art renniek each counted a pair for ajax following a fracas in town on saturday afternoon robt hathaway main street appeared in magistrates court richmond hill on tuesday the case is scheduled for march 30 routine check on a routine check of a car stouffville on saturday eve ning pc edward grimshaw discovered a quantity of burg lar tools in the auto david ed ward sullivan 31 of london ont appeared in court on tuesday his case was also re
