schools everywhere are surely every parents concern for good education pays rich dividends to the individuals and to canada but we will not have better education in our schools until there is better education about our schools during canadian education week march 714 it is the hope of the ontario federation of home school association that local associations will help to educate more citizens about education the importance of education and the communitys obligation to provide first rate schools for all of ontarios children and youth how far have we in ontario come in improving our educati onal system in some communi ties students are benefitting from improved science and math courses some children have television bringing lessons not previously available in their school but there are still chil dren being taught from out dated textbooks and possibly with antiquated teaching meth ods there arc areas too small to provide the variety of pro grams essential for children of different abilities there are communities with no libraries or counselling services avail able to children and youg people we have seen the drop out rate fall mainly because of the robarts plan in secondary school education in ontario some of our teachers have low certification and have never or will never try to improve their teaching or certificate we arc short many permanent class rooms many of our children spend their day in wooden port ables which are possible health hazards and fire traps yes we are a long way away from equal educational opportunities for all the quality of a childs educa the high cost and dangers of poor educa tion but we also share the div idends of good education it en sures good citizenship and gov ernment fosters economic growth and progress in technol ogy science social welfare and health it enriches personal jiv ing and social relationships the ontario federation of home and school associations is working hard to secure public support for quality education not only in the community of the local association but throughout onrio and canada in cooperation with its canadi an federation during education week the ontario federation of home school association would like to salute the minister of educa tion the honourable william g davis and the department for the progress that has been made in bringing a better education system together with a higher standard of teaching to ontario sigh woe is me alas- well my fellow working canadi ans its that time of year again the time to drop whatever you re doing ana concentrate on one thing only income tax this is the time to test your clever ness and just see whether you are smarter than the govern ment of canada this year to make you feel as though members of the taxa tion data centre know you per sonally your income tax form comes completed with your name already on it in reality though their only thought is getting them out and back as fast as possible and as long as you meet their requirements they dont really give a hoot who you are personally i have it made as long as i stay single and dont make too much money then i can complete my form with nothing more than a mathema tics certificate from the univers ity of toronto working for three different employers last year i had to wait until all my t4 slips came in and its especially humour ous when they dont know where to send them one came to the office one went to my home town and a third ended up in toronto i practically had to take a weeks vacation just to collect them with all the data rounded up in one town the rest is simple just transfer the information on the small sheets to the big sheet you know the one with your name on it however if the job seems a little rough go ing the federal men assist you by inserting an extra copy so you have two copies one for the mistakes you see and one for the mistakes they see nine times out of ten the one you send in will be worse than the one you practised on they allow you three positions on the tl form thats the big sheet to list your employers it you didnt work the full year they want to know why did you ever try to explain that between the first and second jobs you spent two weeks getting rid of your severence pay and be tween the second and third jobs you took a trip around the prov ince in five words or less so you sum it all up in two little words goofing off finally when all your income is complete you turn into a sneak and a coniver to see how many ink marks you can make in the deductions column of course they dont have to know all your income but its important that the deductions come out on page two they give you the whole page for your exemp tions well i get basic exemp tion of 51000 then theres the age exemption of 500 if you were born in 1899 or earlier thats fine i just missed it by 45 years going over the rest of the ex emptions with a magnifying glass i failed to claim any more cash for myself of course thats understandable im not married or divorced i dont have 19-year- old children attending university and i couldnt find any great grandmothers that i might sup port then theres a bonus in the bottom left hand corner of page one it claims that you can have 5100 deducted with no questions asked or by enclosing receipts can claim all medical expenses charitable donations and union dues well im as charitable as the next guy but not to the extent of more than 5100 1 aslo joined a union but theyre not too ex pensive and although i believe im suffering from yellow jaun dice i dont have any medical expenses to prove it so i had no alternative but to grab the free hundred before anything went wrong that gave me exemptions to talling 5110000 since i made a couple of thousand more than that it would only be natural that i pay and i have paid all year from each pay cheque so the big question comes up did i pay too much and per chance will get a refund or do they want more well i saw a refund coming on the federal tax payable but it took a drastic drop when the provincial tax was thrown in however i came out in the long run on the black side which is better than last year when they nailed me for three cents right under the line that you sign your name on and near the line where they demand your phone number in small print are the words it is a serious offence to make an false income tax return so i think ill let them keep my refund theyll probably get it anyway the stooffyim thome tkrvhy mardb tl 1965 7 church news christ church anglican stouffvuxe rev john l ball rector sunday
