basic to good government said deputy- reeve stewart rumble in a statement after he had walked out of a recent special mark ham township council meeting the special meeting had been called to appoint a represent ative to the court of revision at the november 2 council meeting two men had been nominated but as councillor robert sloane was absent and neither council lor cleary palmer nor councillor charles hoover would withdraw their nomination the four man council was stalled on the deci sion and a special meeting was called at which it was hoped the missing member would be present when reeve hooper opened the november 4 meting com menting that there were no dep utations and otherwise conduct ing it as a regular council meet ing mr rumble objected that it was a special meeting to con sider only the one matter the appointment to the court of revision was then discussed and in the interests of unity councillor palmer withdrew his nomination of benjamin lynd and councillor hoovers nomi nee howard stiver was accord ingly appointed this little bit of business mr rumble noted cost the ratepay ers of markham twp over 100 as councillors aie paid s18 for each meeting they attend plus a mileage allowance the reeve then went on to consider other business at which point mr rumble object ed more strongly and had clerk harry crisp read the rules gov erning special council meetings they confirmed his contention stating that 24 hours notice must be given of a special meeting and that matters to be consider ed are to be included in the no tice while he was content to waive formal notice of the meeting as he had been present when it was planned mr rumlbe felt it was entirely out of order to discuss anything but what had been originally intended when reeve hooper insisted in proceeding in spite of the rules deputyreeve rumble left the meeting its no way to conduct a meeting he stated with the reeve making up the rules as he goes along after mr rumbles angry exit council
