where it has been al most impossible to set a food seedbed ready for wheat de spite several cultivations walk ing over the field is like walk ing over a pile of bricks the surface of the soil is just a mass of lumps big and small and hard as bullets it wil make a few god rains to soften these up and get the field in shape ag ain as you would expect this problem occurs on heavy clay soil types the first reaction is to simply condemn clay for be ing hard to handle unfortun ately this doesnt- solve the problem it makes more sense to take a critical look at how we work these soils to see it cultivation practices are aggravating the problem weather influences the way soil works too but i think the weather this fall has been nearly ideal for getting a seedbed ready the real fly in the ointment could well be overworking the land over a period of years ov erworking clay results in com paction compaction keeps out moisture and air bacterial and chemical action in the soil slows down after about ten years of this its not unreason able to expect that field will work up like a pile of rubble i looked at several fields of corn this summer where growth was very slow digging down around the roots with a shovel again revealed hard solid com pacted day these were fields that had been cropped fairly heavily in the last ten years i think the chances are pretty good that cultural practices are at least partly to blame when the ground gets too hard minimum tillage may well help to solve the problem i know that most people on hea vy clay think that minimum tillage is for the birds but if there is even a shred of truth in it its worth some thought this business of pounding the life out of soil with heavy duty disc harrows is sort of ridicu lous anyway so we might as well be ridiculous one way as another these disc harrows bring up another point grain corn grow ers use this implement almost exclusively cultivators and old corn stalks dont go well to gether discing on nice loamy soil is fine but again on clay its a compacting operation on clay we badly need some gismo that will do a good job of stalk chopping so that a cultivator can be used as the main tillage walk along the rows of stores in our little town i see the remembrance day dis plays that were made in honour of great soldiers perhaps there is but a helmet a bayonet and a hand grenade but these are enough to stir the imaginations of the young and memories and emotions of the old i see in my minds eye the battlefield although weary and fatigued our boys fight with courage and determination vol leys of shot pour down upon them on all sides of them are explosions making this place a pit of death a fatally wounded soldier fails and dies clutching a picture of his beloved family it is after the transport hoalnrinh3skeithioiste peter sanderson orchard park on november the eleventh we will observe remembrance day a day set aside to honour the brave hearts of three wars a memorial to their memory and the cause for which they died but remembrance day means more to me than just honouring our veterans it should be a challenge for all of us to learn to make personal sacrifices to preserve the peace for which they paid so high a price in giv ing their lives for a way of life which they believed was best they left us a debt that can never be repaid i hope that never again will it be necessary for man to fight to preserve our freedom for war accomplishes nothing the cost in human lives and materials alone is too great to measure it is hard for me to realize how veterans and their families feel because i have been un touched by wars but i have marched in remembrance day parades as a scout and i have been proud to walk along with those wfio were willing to sacri fice so much willing to give up their lives if necassary they left their homes families and jobs to travel overseas to defend their country and their way of life not all of them returned but those who did now proudly re member their comrades we are a global community and distance can no longer keep us isolated from the problems of our neighbours all over the world we must learn to live together or die together there is no choice therefore i fcellt is our duty to do our utmost to help create understanding trust and cooperation for- the cause of world peace and human brother hood thus we will be able in our smallway to repay some of the debt we owe our heroes w d atkinson phone stouffville 640 3813 licensed auctioneer and i sale manager sales con ducted anywhere specializing in tiie preparation
