to 800 par ents at the annual stouffville dlst high school commence ment exercises on friday night board chairman merlyn baker lashed out at any prepared cur riculum that was designed to benefit only students with keen academic interest in criti cizing such a policy mr baker outlined a new broader and more practical program that would assist boys and girls in the de velopment of other vocations he said that the board was whole heartedly in favour of this trend he said that two new rooms would be built onto the present school to provide occu pational and technical courses that previously were not attain able at stouffville should we turn out the slow- learners to fend for themselves in a world that is fast becoming automated he asked do we just care about the clever stu dents is high school just for those who find academic courses easy for the students whose parents are paying the taxes if the board should take such an irresponsible attitude toward young people then possibly we have ceased to be an asset our selves and are only a liability to our community attendance growing principal w e duxbury in welcoming the parents and friends noted that the high school enrollment had reached 490 or just double the attend ance figure of seven years ago he said that the school was erected 11 years ago and since that time two additions have been constructed and the board was planning for a third he said that although stouffville could still offer only limited op tions every effort was being ex erted to make additional courses available m the school late fred hicks was pickering tp road foreman the community of brougham lost a highly respected resident and the twp of pickering lost a valuable road department employee in the death on fri day nov 13th of mr fred hicks mr hicks passed away in the osliawa general hospital fol lowing an illness of about four months he was in his 50th year born in the municipality where he lived and worked all his life the deceased joined the township road staff 24 years ago and rose to the position of road foreman he spent four years on active duty overseas with the canadian army the late mr hicks was iden tified with st johns united church in brougham in his younger days he was an avid sportsman and played hockey for brougham he was a mem ber of the whitevale chapter 155 of the oddfellows and ser ved on the volunteer fire bri gade he had been a resident of brougham for over 20 years besides his wife the former jean campbell he is survived by two sons ted 16 and den nis 13 both at home there are four brothers ivan bill
