po 7 the stourryuli wvjhf twufcy sept 17 i9m editorial tire squealers certainly residents of stouffville will be under the same impression as officials of the ontario safety league that unnecessary squealing of tires due to overacceleration is on the increase a great number of young male drivers seem to think it is the clever wanfr to raise delegates to the recent ontario municipal association convention are urging the provincial government to increase the cost of marriage licenses from 5 to s7 this could be done by- amending the marriage act the reasons for such an increase are not clear most licensing is done as a means of control not as a means to raise on the increase thing to do however each squeal peels rubber off the tires and makes unjustified demands on the cars transmission this showoff certainly draws attention to the driver and may somehow build up his immature ego otherwise it is about as productive as throwing money down the drain cost of marrying money with government being the one agency that is looked to to hold the inflation line it seems too bad if it seems necessary to dip into the li cense field for a few paltry dollars the only thing that is required is registration to keep the statistics and surely this cost is covered by a 55 fee or even less it certainly seems as if some are simply trying to make some extra money out of licensing an unsavory stouffvilles last municipal coun cil meeting opened up unsavory charges against the reeve of the town which certainly do not sit well with the general public the reeve did not deny that the action of which he was accused by two members of his coun cil was true but merely contended that what he had done was quite up find above board ve believe that in this loose explanation reeve timbers has miss ed the point whether he has orhas not accepted remuneration for his services to a real estate agency deal ing in town property is not the point f concern in our opinion he should not get within a hundred miles of any property deal involving the muni- tipality if he was paid for such ser vice this would only compound the lituation the reeves error is having any business connection whatever be it on a paid basis or otherwise with any real es tate dealings on property in which his municipality is involved with so many such cases having come to light in recent years and with so many court investigations regarding just this very thing it is a real sur prise that the local reeve would allow himself to be so involved the public takes a very dim view of such ac tions and such things develop sus picions which though they be groundless can grow the local public is also upset by the failure of two members of council to allow such a serious charge to be levelled against the chief executive without expressing some opinion their silence helps neither the reeve nor their fellow council members and does not enhance their position with the public people in glass in the annals of intercommunity sport protests are a dirty business issues although seemingly settled in the committee rooms can transform friendly town rivalry into bitter team hatred in many cases the loser be comes the respected hero while the winner is categorized as a sorehead and a cheat in local softball circles this is the trend of many peoples thinking with respect to the mark- ham newmarket feud persons not familiar with the controversy should know that mark- ham filed an official protest with the ontario amateur softball associa tion over newmarkets alleged use of an illegal player following a closed door meeting in toronto the new market entry was given the old heaveho from further ontario play off competition this season and mark- ham was permitted to advance into a second round sports editor geo haskett of the newmarket era and express has been beating out torrid text of criti cism against the markham manage ment ever since with nary a note of rebuttal in reply we personally have no axe to grind with either side so can speak without prejudice on the subject fok and about teenagers houses f although not acquainted with the newmarket team executive we do know messrs jack watson john lunau and harry young of markham and can say with all sincerity that they just dont come any better in grinding his teeth over the protest mr haskett is in fact cri ticizing not the markham club but the oasa chiefs who settled the issue in markhams favour the new market management sounds very much like the little dog who yelps when his ears are clipped for digging in a neighbors flower garden it al ways hurts when youre caught as for mr hasketts derision of the markham teams playing capabil ities that is not the point in question the point is that newmarket used an illegal player and for making that mistake intentional or otherwise the ontario playoff season for them came to a sudden end there are two sides to this story of course both sides were told at the protest meeting markhams side was upheld mr haskett a veteran on the sports beat cannot be that biased in his thinking to suggest that new market proven all wrong are now all right it doesnt make sense ssy t u amim is too shy to see boy personally not weeks letter i like m boy very much my parents hart nerer met him and i do sot want than to meet him i am hy and afraid to see him in per son he telephones often and i find it easy to talk to him yet i in still afraid to talk to him in person he asked me to to to the movies frith him and i turned him down i am afraid to see him in person what can i do to over come this shyness our reply shyness is quite natural for the teen who has never dated before it is nothing to be ashamed of yet something has to be done about it i am sure that you have heard or read that even great athletes have moments of apprehension before a game or a contest begin the same is true of many famous performers and orators nearly all of us are hesi tant about new experiences about doing new things meeting new- people you should begin by having a talk with your parents tell them about this bey and about your shyness if they allow you to date they are entitled to meet the boy invite him over when both your parents are home you should feel more relaxed in the atmos phere of your own home and youll find that your shyness will soon disappear if tm k tmaut rnutm j vut u 4tcam t aa from letters from my son the first one was found in the breadbox one morning a couple of weeks ago id sat up until midnight with hugh convincing him that for financial and political reasons his down the highway in her baie feet calling after him his kid sister was interested but not impressed her com ment was what a dope then society intruded as always what will the neighbors think if he comes home in a police car what will the neigh bors think and ask if he doesnt come home at all why did he do this to us has he no gratitude for all weve done for him and so on kim merely repeated what a dope people are tough we cooled off we realized there wasnt a sensible thing we could do about it and we went to the con vention but not before wed done some checking and found hed cleaned out school building at clare- mont was opened in january 1924 as both public and continu ation schools having been a student at the good old ccc claremont continuation class in both the former building which was im mediately to the west of the present school and the existing building the construction of which we were able to watch i am at a loss to understand your quotation re a new continuation school in 1944 writers note thank you very much for putting us straight your information is absolutely correct checking back in a 1924 copy of the tribune we find that 300 per sons attended the official open ing of the 5 room school on jan 8th the cost of the build ing was estimated at 340000 by way of explanaition we be came confused when in a 1944 issue of the tribune we notic ed a picture of the school and were misled into thinking that the structure had just been completed r a bygone days from the files of the tribune 5 years ago sept 1959 miss carol lewis rn a graduate of the- sick childrens hospital toronto has joined the office staff of drs mitchell and smith in stouffville school attendance in stouffville totalled 809 on opening day with 312 at summitview and 214 at orchard park larry bellman of stouffville headed his class in the giadua- tion of the rcmp held at ottawa the thermometer at the cor ner of church and main sts in town rose to a i ecord 115 degre es on sept 8th rev d r mckillican pasor of st james and st andrews presbyterian churches in stouff ville and markham delivered his farewell address after 11 years of service to the two congrega tions mr mckillican has ac cepted an appointment as dean of students at knox college toronto claremont public school at tendance totals 155 with all looms filled roamin around therehave been some muttering of dissatisfaction from parents of children who have been shifted from orchard park to summltvieu public school they axe pupils in the grade 6 class that due to insufficient room accommodation are reoulred to walk or ride the extra distance personally we dont think the exercue will do the lids any harm if they had ever lived in the country they would know long before now what its like to walk a mile or two daily and not on sidewalks either it quite obvious however that the board will have to make some move to enlarge one of the school structures or build a brand new one ballantraes herbert otto whose ability knows no bounds either in academics or athletics is the new president of the students council at stouffville dlst high school for the 191- 65 term under his capable leadership a good year is assured by the way what has happened to the onceorganized stouff ville ratepayers association if this organization is still active it is certainly in a very quiet way like so many groups of this kind they start off with a big bang then fizzle out like a watersoaked firecracker we still think that there is a place for such an institution in any community if it can remain operative expert plowmen may have keen eyes for straight furrows but curves in the right places are never overlooked by our country cousins either for this reason we feel that more effort should be exerted by local plowing match promoters to encour age more feminine entries in various classes after attending the east york competitions on the jas mckean farm last fall we feel we can speak from experience the land plowed by the then elizabeth barker of hcadford attracted a good deai of attention but you may be sure that the male viewers were look ing at more than just the ground with the york county junior match at lemonvillc on saturday it would be a fine opportunity to get one or two girls started after all we must admit that the ladies have proved a match for meu in almost every other field the name wally conic may be familiar to many local folk in stouffville we met up with this gentleman last week and although he didnt know this writer from adam lie was quick to recall many of the boys who saw overseas service in world war ii lie said that he was a member of the toronto scottish regiment and took part in the landing on uday we took the time to check back through some old copies of the tribune and sure enough in the june 20th issue of 1940 there was his kiltclad picture as large as life a little thinner on lop and thicker around the middle but still the same man wally is now living at musselmans lake if the stouffville horticultural society was donating an award to the finest home floral displays in the village this fall they would surely have to consider the premises of mrs lloyd turner mrs win timbers mrs casper stover and mrs isaac foskett harold collins in the sherwood park subdivision north of no 7 ilwy in markham is very concerned for the safety of his and other children crossing the road on the way to the new crosby public school this of course is one of the hazards that exists when a main thoroughfare cuts through a munici pality we viewed the area personally on friday around 330 pm and were amazed at the motorists lack of regard for the safety of the pupils or the adult crossing guards themselves for that matter one driver turned out and passed another right in front of st patricks school while the boys and girls were coming out some motorists display no common sense at all and we can only wonder why the fatality toll isnt higher than it is mr collins has threatened to remove his child from school unless a permanent move is made to insure the children safety speaking about hazards i wonder if this topic has ever been discussed by the home and school association at green river we never drive through this area in the morning or afternoon but wonder when the first childs life will be taken its a miracle that such a tragedy has not already occurred norman hendricks the lucky guy has won himself 1 queen his bridetobe bernadine terwoerds is the reigning may queen of stouffville high the couple will be married in the stouffville united church on oct 3rd the lighting of the town tennis courts could be a fine pro ject for the park board or some organization to assume and the cost shouldnt be too great thanks to the lions club the asphalt base is in good condition the net if you can call it that is no better than an elongated dishrag and should be leplaced before another season rolls around any morning now we expect to see the town post office sitting halfway down on market street the driver of th local mail truck from up lindsay way has such excellent judg ment that he can wheel his big machine up the narrow alley without touching a brick and thats no easy task most people couldnt do it with a car if some night youre jolted from your beds by the sound of crumpling mortar youll know the reason why the congregation of st andrews presbyterian church markham have good reason to be proud of their new christian education building that was officially dedicated on sunday morning it is a fine structure beautifully finished inside in every detail the addition is certainly a good sign for these times it must be a good growing season for puffballs since icports of huge specimens are coming in rrom many areas the largest we have ever heard of and possibly a record was the jind on the miller farm cone 3 markham it weighed believe nr not 22 pounds if any residents in the district has ever seen one to top his wed like to know about it if all heads turn when danny oboylc drives by its because hes behind the wheel of a 1925 studebaker the 39 year old auto appears in excellent shape and is possibly worth more now than when it was new although no particular lover of antiques we were intrigued with the displays presented in the markham arena on friday and saturday the show attracted large crowds with many vis itors from across the border sales at some booths were re ported to be good in spite of prices that far exceeded the inlcrloi value of this writers pockclbook mr ernie button one of this towns best known and most highly respected senior citizens marked his 88th birthday on aug 17th and although some weeks past now we couldnt permit it to go unmontioned the
