on the farm front a a wall agricultural reprevuitatite york county eugene lemon farm site of soybean crop project op yk cty we have another project go- iiz thu year on growing toy- bean we probably jhouid give up on thi crop in york county we have never been able to get satisfactory yields although farmer have tried them here many time we keep try though be- caue thl crop has o much po tential in a county like york our need for protein is to great for dairy cattle beef cattle hog and poultry that if we could grow tome of it ourselves it would strengthen our whole livestock industry one of the main problems has been weed control in come from the crop does not justify row cultivation if weeds ar allowed to grow yield suf fers badly we are trying a new method with chemicals this year on eugene lemon s farm at stouffville the seed bed was prepared first and then left for about two weeks in this time weed growth got well started the bean were then planted with out any cultivation right after planting the field was sprayed with amine dinitro a chemical that kills all vegetation the bean are up nicely now and they should keep well ahead of late germinating weeds this system is called planting on a stale seedoed we hope it works because it might mean that we are a little closer to soybeans being a practical crop here our old friend the oat nema tode has showed up in several places this year one field i have seen will be almost a com plete loss the damage shows up in patches where the grain is a very poor colour and quite obviously stunted there is no practical treatment for it the only answer is to stop growing oats on affected fields where the infestation is not too seriout an oat barley mix ture will do fairly well but yields will be seriously affected news from lemonville monday evening was the an nual mother and daughter ban quet of the cgjt there were fifty present bonnie smith proposed tne toast to the church responded to by rev roy ingli francis smith proposed a toast to mothers and mrs morris smith responded margaret coughlan paid tribute to the leaders and mrs turner brown if either oats or barley are sown as pure stands if nematode damage is ser ious this year then i would suggest getting the field into sod next spring direct seeding without a nurse crop would be good for this situation farm ponds are in the news these days there is a new gov see the historic sites in the area the junior class went to pioneer village resolution on the flag issue which was subsequently divid ed by the decision of the speak er yesterday the ministry has met its obligation to submit a proposal for a distinctive cana dian flag to parliament and parliament in the british and canadian tradition must now decide the leader of our party has campaigned on a distinctive canadian flag in the last two elections it has been a prominent plank in our partys platform for the last four years our responsibility was to submit the design to parliament and this we have done for myself i advocate a flag as 1 said previously which is cana das own and only canadas a distinctive canadian flag which cannot be mistaken for that of any other country a flag which represents the past symbolizes the present and points to the future the flag of the union the union jack is much loved in this country and 1 will vote to retain it in our land but i will vote too for our own canadian flag one that i know will be flown throughout my country with pride respect and patriotism 1 intend to vote for the dis tinctive canadian flag put for ward by the government in this resolution and for retaining the flying of the union jack tkrsy fcfie 23 t64 the stourtyille tribune pt r wrestling in the markham arena on friday june 26 at 845 pm kxploration of the north pole
