those attending the fashion show presented by the ghvs branch of the york cen tral hospital auxiliary last here is the brief that council wouldnt hear on may 5 1964 ed maynard chairman of the union at amalgamated electric corp wrote markham council asking permission to present a statement of community concern acknowledgement of receipt of the letter was made to the union by the village clerk a delegation of 25 women and men from amalco appeared at council meeting on may 19 we were kept sitting in council chambers until 955 pm at which time council refused to hear our statement grounds for refusal that the matter was to be heard by a government conciliation board which made the question a judicial one are entirely unfounded the situation at amalco is completely public and of public concern the outcome will deeply effect everyone in the community although reeve walker as quoted in the public press said she would not promise to read the union statement we feel many other citizens will want to read discuss and understand the basic issue at stake in the dispute at amalco the union statement is reproduced here very serious situation we are a delegation representing employees at amalgamated electric corporation we are citizens of the town and communities in this im mediate area we take this ster of seeking an audience with you because of the very serious situation at amalgamated right now we are on the eve of the final round in trying to peacefully win a reasonable and just agreement with the company on wage rates and conditions of work we refer to concil iation proceedings which have been ordered by the ontario labor relations board we are ad vised that the hearing will commence on tuesday june 2 1964 it is our tionest hope that this corporation will find it within its heart to put forward a rea sonable basis of settling our dispute however unless the company has a major change of heart and acts in an honorable way towards citizens from markham and area there can be no basis of settlement two wage standards boiled down to hard facts amalgamated elec tric seeks to impose two standards on employees at the plant one standard is for the 60odd work ers brought from the previous plant location the second standard a secondclass one is re served for employees hired locally what the company offers is 105 an hour for women 130 an hour for men as hiring rates with maximum rates of 115 for women and 155 for women and 155 for men in startling contrast to this offer by amalco is the most recent tabulation of average wages in ontario at january 1964 the average wage paid to men and women working in industry was 8693 per week amalco offers a top gross wage to men hired from this community of 6200 a week for skilled work scaling down to 5200 gross pay a week for men and as low as 4200 for women thus it is readily seen that ontarios average weekly pay rate is 2473 higher than the maximum offered by amalgamated and more than double that offered to women it should be realized that amalgamated elec tric corporation is the whollyowned canadian subsidiary of the multimillion dollar general electric company of great britain although the canadian company does not make its balance sheet available the parent company reported net profit in the last fiscal year more than 60 per cent higher than 1962 competitors pay more also to be considered is the fact that amal gamated competes with companies which pay wages far in excess of amalgamated electric square d company toronto for instance has a minimum rate for women of 185 an hour and a labor rate for men of over 200 an hour other competitive firms pay rates comparable to square ds it must also be underlined that in the market place amalco workers pay the same prices as workers who receive these higher rates the super market the drug store the gas station the appliance store the tax assessor have no lower price for us and prices in markham are generally as high as toronto or oshawa what amalgamated electric corporation seeks to achieve is a lowwage island in markham between toronto and oshawa where people from the community and area can be the victims of super exploitation the company concept is a colonial one which victimizes both our citizens and the community the workers at amalco who are paid higher rates do not live in markham they spend their pay packets outside of the community so do company officials low wages effect community those of us who live in markham spend our wages here we are the ones who suffer local merchants and professional people suffer too community cash registers are not overworked on wages paid at amalgamated markham has a proud tradition dating back to the early settlement here by the reesor family down through history we have always held our heads high in our own community and elsewhere today amalgamated electric wage policy humiliates and degrades our citizens and our com munity many of us work along side older service workers brought here from toronto when the company moved we operate similar equipment we have mastered the skills required yet we are paid about half of what the company pays to these other workers women from this community have mastered the required skills too but the company pays our women citizens 105 to 115 an hour for the same work they paid substantially more for at toronto amalgamated electric corporations attitude towards citizens of this community is a shame and a disgrace controller herbert orliffe of toronto city council charged last year that this company sought to turn the hands of history back to the dark ages what they want to do in markham is precisely this at a time in history when coun tries throughout the entire world are shaking off colonial rule the britishowned amalgamated electric is trying to impose a colonial status on citizens of this community we are determined that this company treat us fairly and justly as firstclass citizens of a firstclass community we will seek within the next short period of time to impress the company with this determination do not want strike we are anxious io get a peaceful settlement ave have no wish whatsoever to be forced to take strike action but we do want council to under stand we will not continue to be humiliated and degraded by the secondclass status this company seeks to impose on us we can assure you we will be patient reasonable and conciliatory in pressing our demands for fair play this advertisement is placed as a community service by local 512 to acquaint citizens of this area with the facts in the labor dispute at amalgamated electric corp we solicit community support in our determined program to win a living wage from this british owned corporation united electrical radio machine workers ue markham
