uxbridge twp reeve alvin redshaw on the steps of the goodwood hall march 26th charged is the former township assessor robt f clarke 56 of cone 5 uxbridge magistrate ebbs elected to reserve judgment in the case until april 28th there were no witnesses to the alleged assault and facts as provided by reeve redshaw were refuted by the accused whose story was the direct opposite to that told by the plaintiff mr clarkes solicitor failed to appear but he elected to proceed on his own claiming his opponents were ganging up on him and out for blood former uxbridge twp assessor robt f clarke puffin monday night and submitted a unani mous resolution favouring the purchase of the eight acres of land near the ballantrae school as a recreation centre for the district the price offered is 4900 the the area had done just that deputy reeve farquharson said he favoured the purchase the township had 2600 in its park account and the govern ment would pay a grant of 1200 which would only leave 1100 for the budget reeve williams drew atten tion to the fact that the govern ment grant would not be avail able for over a year so if con sent was granted for the use of the 2600 the budget would re quire to raise the remainder of 2300 not just 1100 he said there was already a high increase expected in the tax rate and members should not forget that there would be continued on page 12 fighting said he left i told him youre the reeve of the township and i dont want to get mixed up with you the accused admitted to a weight of 250 pounds about 100 pounds more than mr redshaw clarke charged that the reeve was hos tile because he had won a de duction in his assessment in the county court of appeal he de nied that he had hit redshaw on the jaw with his fist ive never had a mark against me and at nearly 57 its a little late to start pounding anyone aiound he said i came out here uxbridge twp to live a quiet life i cursed the council mr redshaw with a red mark still visible on his lore- asked him to step out side as i was the reeve i felt that it was my duty to go he said mr redshaw said that clarke cursed the whole council and then hit him on the side o the face with his fist i fell that the present park on rupert st be abandoned for a much larger area immediately west and running from rupert to elm rd mr chiavitta said he realized that he would be re quired to donate a five per cent parcel of land for park purpos es but he was not prepared to extend the services by the park property which he considered should be a municipal respon sibility he was willing to do the job on a street run ning north and south and to be known as timbcrlane there were no definite ob jections raised by council re garding the home but council lor parsons raised the question on the amount of taxes the large establishment would be called upon to pay councillor spang said he did not object to the development but he was definite that the municipality should not pay out any money for services he was generally supported by all oth er board members in this stand anxious to start there was considerable spe culation as to whether or not the department would permit a shift in the park property and it was agreed that the govern ment would be contacted this week on the matter councillor spang also questioned as to whether all the work which has been done on the present loca tion should be abandoned mr chiavitta said he would like to proceed immediately and the home was anxious to commence work however it was pointed out that the plan was only be- i ins presented for the first time j and no action could be taken until it was fully approved and registered there was also the matter of an agreement with the municipality regarding ser vices which would have to be signed before any lots could be sold home a gift mr chiavitta and mr h woods a member of the town industrial committee were strong in their praise of the home as a town asset council lor parsons said he couldnt see as it was any great asset and it would likely be exempt from some municipal taxes the de veloper indicated that he would like the home to be classed as industry so that he could ob tain permission to proceed with homebuilding this point mem bers were not ready to agree to he said he was donating the land to the church group but members could not see that this was any concern of the town a new plan on the area sho wing the street extensions and lots was supplied to the town office early this week as well as a cash offer if the town would make certain service conces sions markham police asking for new salary scale markham township police association is asking markham township council for a new and increased salary scale the new rates being asked were not revealed at the regular council meeting the township council police committee has agreed to con sider the request further if no satisfaction is reached the mat ter can be expected to go to arbitration agree to 64 grant in lieu of taxes markham township council has by bylaw agreed to accept the sum of 54200 from toronto in lieu of taxes on the old jail farm property at langstaff some years ago the assessment on the farm was set
