stouffville coop 6401550 or 6401551 wants zone meetings for councillors to talk to markham twp ratepayers markham townhip council lor cleary palmer thinks its high time to clear the air and give the people an understand ing of what is going on and why there have been o many split votes by township council with these words councillor palmer intioduced his surprose palmer introduced his mirpribe ing on each member to organize a township council night to enable ratepayers to know just here they stand on vital issues councillor palmer said later he was becoming quite con cerned with the number of split votes weve been having and the way councils business has been run generally its getting so we would have a split vote on whether to have a cup of coffee he felt that ratepayer in general weie presently confused at just what direction the town ship is going and the way its getting there i feel these meetings in each of the wards he said would give each member a chance to stand up and present his views and let the ratepayers know just where he stands he stated it was his firm opinion that councillors should vote for what they believe in and not just go looking for votes in the next election x think its high time wc all balsam ml zion the ucw met last wed at the home of mrs leslie har bron with mrs harbron and mrs jack empringham on the programme the theme of the meeting was on hsrourable walter gor don minister of finance the date of the budget was a little earlier than usual and it brought forth some speculation as to the reason for this early date the most logical specula tion is that ihe government wanted the budget revealed pri or to tlie dominionprovincial conference slated for march 31st they nould then be in a position to say to the provinces that they were unable to come to their assistance financially due to their own fiscal position the budget as not spectacu lar the minister noted that the upswing which began in 1961 continued and the piospects were that 1964 would be a good year unemployment continued to deo ease following the pattern which began in 1961 and em ployment was iuci easing all of the policies of the former gov ernment weie retained and they have had a favourable effect upon the economy deficits are still being main tained even though the promises at election time were made on balanced budgets the 11 sales tax imposed last year on building materials and production machinery is be ing applied and no retreat from oiis tax was made four percent of this tax has been in effect and an additional four percent will be added to the purchase price on march 31st of this year the remaining three percent will come into effect december 31st 1964 this tax is bound to have an adverse effect in the construc tion and manufacturing areas some manufacturers are plan ning to move south of the bor dcr as the result of this tax this means less jobs in canada and works in reverse to what we are trying to achieve there is also the possibility of a slowdown in house building this summer because of the ad ditional tax and because many homes weie built this past win ter in order to qualify for the 500 bonus offered by the gov ernment for constructing homes in the winter months the budget provided no change in liquor and tobacco tax lates except for some tax ease ment allowing scotch wiskey to enter canada in 25 ounce bottles theie is a provision for the deduction fiom taxable income of tuition fees paid by pai ttime students if exceeding s25 annu ally 1 wonder how many of these make enough to esen pay income tax
