principal of a high school this individual has the duty not only of teaching regular classes but being responsible for almost the entire school program through the year long hours the pre paring of examination schedules and time tables for hundreds of students are only a few of the heavy requirements of pres ent day principals w e duxbury principal mr vv e duxbury principal of stouffville district high school is certainly no exception jlr duxbury has been principal at our school for the past 7 ears he obtained previous ex perience while teaching at cal edonia for four years and being principal at cayuga situated kouthof hamilton for 4 years mr duxbury obtained his b a degree at the mcmaster uni versity and spent one year at the ontario college of educa tion in toronto he has com pleted eight summer courses he finds that in working at his occupation there is never a monotonous day being princi pal you are never sure what is going to come up or who is going to contact you each day states mr duxbury however buch time has to be spentwith students who arent leally interested in their school work this usually leaves me with the feeling that i am not giving as much of my time as i would like to pupils who are seriously engaged in their stu dies but are still having difflcu- ties with their work he said teenagers are often mis judged in todays society the majority of them are honest reliable citizens possessing a good deal of enthusiasm and energy and having a good deal to contribute to society he con tinued in contrast to the opi nion of some of todays adults teenagers have not degenerated in character from past genera tions mr duxbury believes that the future will bring about additio nal courses which will be added to the curriculum at present we have only the five year arts and science course and the one year special commercial course there are other 4 year courses which are somewhat easier and yet valuable and these should help to keep students in school longer he hopes that stouff ville will soon have a four year commercial course beginning in grade 10 despite much discussion on the matter of what subjects are most important in a secondary school mr duxbury believes each subject is on the curricu lum for a certain purpose and that all are of equal importance depending on the individual student tickets now on sale finally the longawaited tick ets for this matchless spectacle are on sale if you act promptly you may not have to settle for standing room already a block of 100 tickets has been reserved and the demand is mounting any student from operetta scenery in full swinjr roger mole is taking care of the scenery he has had a great deal ot experience from working on decorations for school dances and other functions mr smith gave him the main idea of the scenery needed and roger made this idea fit the stage his first job was the drafting of the levels this work started in the christmas holidays right now he is working on the props two scenes needed the first scene contains main ly a rocky coast line a back drop of water and sky will make up the main part with four dif ferent stage levels in the second scene the back drop will be kept pillars and arches wiil be moved on stage and bolted to the levels this will create the ruins of a saxon and gothic style chapel this part of the scene is very heavy and will pose a problem in set ting it up this scene may take place at moonlight using dra matic lighting effects so far the lighting arrangement has not been decided on keep under 80 masonite and plywood sup ported by 2 by 4s will be used in the chapel roger is hoping that a backdrop of canvas can be obtained if not the old stage curtains or cheesecloth will be used for this ah the lumber is bought through the school shop from schell lum ber roger says the scenery will cost about 80 although many problems have come up the main one will be in moving the scenery quickly painting will start soon all in all roger will be kept quite busy getting it done before the 28th of this month high school sports ferguson leads midget team to victory our midgets played their sec ond league game against wood- bridge and squeezed out a 2422 win at the end of the third quarter we had a 2418 lead in the last quarter we were held to no points but woodbridge on ly managed to get 4 ferguson was outstanding for us getting 11 points and playing a strong defensive game dave boyd als- scored 6 points the juniors had a bad game all around and drop ped a 4932 decision to wood- bridge the absence of our reg ular coach might have been the reason for our loss later in the veek the juniors won an easy exhibition game to pickering college 3119 otto and buckland were high scorers for stouffville getting 12 and 11 points respectively the seniors playing a league game gained a 2523 win at half time we were winning 177 but were out scored in the last half 16s this almost caused a defeat but after excellent passing the stouffville students of sdhs waited for the arrival of friday the 31st after all hadnt the posters promised liz taylor and 10000 dancing girls on our stage well in any case they did come to see the thiee best basketball games of the century although we couldnt persu ade liz to show and although the full cast of 10000 didnt turn up we did have roger moles operetta scenery on the stage 13 of the best cheerleaders this side of markhamdixon hill line and one of the best eve nings entertainment that ive seen around stouffville in a long time once the officials managed to entice david rehill off the floor our own mighty midgets and the gorgeous girls of stouff ville high took to the court the problem of rules was solved by having the first half played with girls rules and naturally enough the second half with boys rules this agreement must have been settled with a double headed coin as the boys obviously had the advantage even in the first half which ended with a score of 14 to 10 in the second half despite the odd extra player on the floor the boys extended their lead to win the game 24 to 12 the next event was the grudge match of the year with the junior citadels trying to get even for all those detentions with a line up like mr waite mr maven mr marshall mr groom mr hammond mr re- hill norm hendricks and allan boyd its no wonder that the teachers lost despite mr j- mar shalls dazzling shorts whicli blinded the opposition mrs greshams guidance from the sidelines and the appearance of the black knight mr maven all the way from untd what ever or wherever that may be the squad from the staff were solidly trounced in all fairness however we must admit that they lived up to their respons ibilities as representatives from pedagogy state u mr maven for example gave a terrific dis play of ball handling while mr rehill showed everyone how to travel the score at half time was 6 to 0 and by the end of the game the boys had extended their lead to 20 to 6 i the third game between the spartans 63 and spartans 64 turned out to be as thrilling and as crowd pleasing a display of basketball as you could find any where despite a layoff of at least 1 year for the grads they managed to stay in the game quite handily with this years senior team who by the way have a very good chance of win ning the georgian bay cham pionship the score at quarter time was 12 to 7 in favour of 64 and 15 to 12 at the half in the third quarter some of the fastest basketball was play ed as the grads began to find their legs and by the end of the fourth quarter they were clos ing the gap and seriously throathenmg 64s lead in the last minute of play the score was tied 26 to 26 until a basket by mike paul for the grads put them ahead 28 to 26 with forty seconds to go gord powell had the opportunity to tie the game with two foul shots but managed only to sink the first the result was a well earn ed win 2s to 27 for the grads in a game that wasnt settled until the very second that the buzzer sounded after such a game sdhs1964 must salute the team of 63 warren hendricks mike paul lloyd graves fred watson gary yates and eldon wagg as the undisputed champs ski club karen dodlow gr 0d teenagers of our town grumble that stouffville is dead stagnant wheres all the fun theres not enough entertain ment but the time comes when a brave little group tries to organize clubs or dances and what happens they are rewarded for their labours by a very poor turnout of kids a small minority of those who felt it was a great idea to begin with stouffville isnt a big town why then is it so hard to introduce new ideas for entertainment which will become realities and remain as such anyone who ever thought of setting up for in stance a show would immediately become discouraged because the teens of stouffville have fallen into an habitual pattern of friday night movies in markham and saturday night dances in the city the school crowd is of course provided with numerous football and basketball hops but lets face it the council cant afford to put on a dance every weekend throughout the year and what happens in the summer ninety per cent of the kids welcome a chance to get away from stouffville for a couple of weeks to find some action recently ive been hunting around for different opinions from tenagers and adults alike the general outlook is blunt but very true theres no point in helping people who wont help themselves those who are complaining about our bored- beyondlimits town ought to for a start get out and support some of these groups who have so far strived in vain for acceptance now that the bowling alley and teentown are back for a second try lets hope that the teens will give better assistance than they have in the past teenage entertainment needs teenage sup port perhaps the future will be more inviting if the kids do consider their predicament in complete sincerity going steady ron castle i feel thai teenagers definitely should not be allowed to go steady but i am not against dating not by a long shot in fact i feel teenagers should be allowed to date frequently and if possible date different persons every time around now take for instance a teenager who goes steady he or she is assured of having a date for most of the dances and other social functions and for this reason along with ethers a large percentage of teenagers go steady but this tends to deprivethem of the enjoyment of meeting people with different in terests and personalities on the other hand the person who freelances has the chance to gain interest in many fields of activity therefore increasing his knowledge and interest by dating a different person each time on entering into the new surroundings of high school some teenagers are shy and refrain from meet ing new people these people usually want to attend the dances but are afraid of what the others might think because they havent got dates so to them going steady means they will have a date whom they know and who will be available when a dance comes up these people should learn to make friends a good way is to date different people a rule that i think would be in good taste to re member when the thought of going steady arises is that variety is the spice of life xi ixxxd now he conveniences of modern living are yours with lp gas delivered anywhere for ranges water heaters refrigerators etc up
