august 1961 was viewed firsthand by a 22 year old claremont district girl one of the more than 100 young people and adults who attended the baptist youth world congress in beirut i-eb- anon miss joyce schneider ashburn rr 1 a teacher on the staff of the beamsvilie public school left by air from malton on july 4th and return ed home five weeks later after visiting such wellknown dist ant points as london vienna jerusalem jordan home and paris a travelogue of her trip will be shown in pictures at the claremont baptist church on monday evening aug 20th armed guards arrangements for passage through the wall at a location known as checkpoint char lie had been made ahead of time but in spite of this it took nearly three hours to gain entry into east berlin all in dividual passports were retain ed by customs officials the group travelled bv car and sub way to a church inside the communist controlled zone and joined with the congregation in a regular service the berlin wall is patrolled by armed east german guards some sections are barricaded by barbed wire and chipped glass and the win dows of houses and apartments bordering on the wall have been boarded up in west ger many memorials have been set up for those who died in attempting to escape across the line including that of peter fechter who was shot by guards and left to bleed to death only a few feet from free dom several in the east ger man congregation could speak broken english and at lean one expressed a keen desire to return the wall was erected in such a short time that many were caught behind the barri cade and their escape was seal ed of west berlin was de scribed as a city comparable to montreal or toronto countries of contrast the oneweek congress was held in the large sports arena in beirut lebanon and was at tended by about 4000 people the group was taken on a cruise across the sea of galilee visited the garden tomb of christ travelled down the riv er nile and even rode on camels among the giant egyption pyr amids many of the countries visited present scenes of con trast new cars and donkeys palatial hotels and slum areas wealthy tourists and beggars like berlin there is a division between israel and jordan is rael is much like toronto while jordan is filthy and poverty- stricken american tourists are every where and souvenir shops are numerous joyce brought home sample keepsakes of almost every country she visited in cluding some water out of the dead sea the temperature there was 120 degrees many of the landmarks mentioned in the bible have been commerci alized due to the tourist trade before embarking on the last leg of her trip to canada joyce spent three days in london and visited many of the historic sites in that city all the high lights of her travels have been captured on film and many can share this adventure in the baptist church on monday eve ning fkws f history in action at brougham museum sept 14 the second annual history in action day will be held at the museum grounds in brougham on september 11th in making the announcement mr robt miller president of the picker ing township historical soci ety reported that last years demonstration was met with such enthusiasm that it was decided to repeat the event this year mr miller explained that the purpose of history in ac tion day is to bring to life the crafts trades and way of life of the early settlers in the area mr don gibson vice president recalled that last year more than 1000 visitors saw demon strations of timber iiewing old steam and gasoline engines weaving spinning and many other pioneer activities chil dren were thrilled by the horse and buggy rides mr miller re ported that many new articles have been obtained since last year and numerous craftsmen skilled in pioneer arts have volunteered to put on demon strations on september 14th committees have been form ed and are busy developing plans for the event committee members were unanimous in their prediction that farmers bus tour the junior farmer bus tour to eastern ontario and quebec is being held this year from sunday august 18th to satur day august 24th this bus trip is sponsored by the ontario department of ag riculture and the provincial ju nior farmers association there are 40 junior farmer boys and girls on this bus trip and they will visit points of in terest in eastern ontario and quebec as far
