pvn the stoufrvill tribune thwwfcy april 4 1963 pickering rural council members are opposed to taxing whole township for new arena tribune gets letter from madam x i is gobbledygook the suggestion that a new ar tificial ice arena and recreation centre should be established in the urban area of pickering township but should be financ ed on a mill rate charge across the entire municipality met with opposition from two rural councillors at a public meeting in brougham on thurs night milton mowbray council rep resentative for ward 2 said that water facilities would be a maj or requirement for such a pro ject and suggested that a site in the southern portion of picker ing would provide this service he argued that it would hardly pay an equal share of the cost burden when they would not make use of the completed fac ilities there are many people in the north who would not pay for an arena regardless of its lo cation said mr mowbray a similar view was expressed by ward 1 councillor harvey spang mr spang also voiced opposition to a plebescite on the issue in december we pay a considerable amouni in to the county perhaps they would help out he said directing his remark to the chairman of the gathering reeve sherman scott ill try replied the reeve but dont hold your breath waiting for it a good attendance in spite of opposition from the stanley cup playoffs in to ronto there was a good repre sentative turnout from almost all residential communities in the township including clare- mom frenchmans bay squir es beach east rouge bay rid ges brougham west rouge and east woodlands at the conclusion of a two hour discus sion on the subject it was final ly agreed that further informa tion on the project should be ac quired by the township recrea tion committee for presentation vithin two months this board is headed by the chairman don ald beer and members mrs jean mcpherson wj greening donald hopkins kalman vizely terry ryan and gordon shaver deputyreeve mrs mcpher son said that since 1951 she had advocated an arena for the township she said that she would favour the sale of stocks to finance the rink rather than raise the money on a mill rate charge both councillors hu bert wank and john greening suggested iha a committee be set up to check into all phases of the scheme councillor ross deakin noted that since the site would very likely be selected in an urban area of the townhsip the mill rate charge could be confined to the present police area i dont think the people in the south end would worry about a three or four dollar charge per year if their children would benefit he said 5000 children clerk lt johnston infoimcd the gathering that there were 5000 children of public school age in the municipality mr ed hannah of dunbarton said that childrens sports acti vities were hampered in picker ing due to a lack of ice facilities and a shortage of softball dia monds we could handle thous ands of boys and girls he said mr donald hopkins a mem ber of the township recreation committee stressed the need for an artificial ice arena first with other sports facilities to be ad ded later as the need became apparent we must think of the children he said its dis gusting and discouraging to tra vel icy roads to brooklin and stouffville all winter or have boys arrive home from the ted reeve arena at one oclock in the morning mr kalman vizely of ciare- mont also a member of the committee said that there were other types of recreation that should be considered besides hockey and softball both mr reg sanderson of claremont and donald beer of brougham agreed that the location should be selected in south pickering mr beer noted however that it would be unlikely that residents of brougham would use the fa cilities with a rink in brooklin and a new arena under cons truction at markham reeve scott said that the pro moters would have to be realis tic in dealing with such a pro gram there may be one hund red people here tonight who are enthusiastic about such a project but it is not necessarily the opinion of 21000 in the en tire township he suggested that a ballot vote on the project could result after all the nec essary information was acquir ed to
