cost to the govt tax govt rebate cost to for dining room restaurant levied to township customers 500 m 10 1300 great revenue all right but who gets it licensed dining room in such areas as musmlmans lake or lake wilcox could easily mean extra police protection the coit of such protection could easily b 5000 a year for the township to offset this increased cost to our taxes dining rooms would hare because its often an inte gral part of the house its logically convertible into part of the homes living area 4 the next question of course is what happens to the car the childrens- bikes garden tools and all the rest that goes into a typical garage an ideal solution can be found in a combination car port patio which offers a bonus of ample storage space a cen tral storeroom area provides the foundation for a cantilever- ed roof of translucent plastic panels one side offers year- round weather protection for the family car while the other half of the overhang serves as a shelter for outdoor family activities making the structure is an excellent doityourself project the plastic panelling is as easy tc work with as wood is light weight and requires a minimum of stock lumber for its support ing framework from the ontario department of agriculture newmarket a a wall agricultural representative for york county a young dairyman put a question to me the other day that i suppose concerns all dairy farmers he wanted to know what he could do to cut down his feed bills i was a little surprised at the question though because the mart was a good manager and gets top production from his cows with cows milking well this man will have to be careful about changing the feed since milk production is so vital to making money there are a few points though that he could consider one is the am of piotein ir the grain ration many dairy herds get more protein than they need the importance of protein has perhaps been over sold this is particularly true where there is good- quality roughage to feed most of the hay this year has good quality and so the feeder can safely cut back a little on the protein in the grain with good rough age grain with 13 to 14 protein should be adequate there could be a good saving here since protein is a most expensive nutrient in the feeds another idea to cut costs is to use more grain corn in dairy feeds up to now dairy farmers have been afraid to use high corn rations but in research it has come through with flying colours corn has a high energy content and it helps to maintain the body weight of heavy pro ducers its an economical feed too because usually one pound of nutrient in corn is cheaper than it is in oats some recom mendations now have well over one half the grain supplied m corn another point is that to get the most milk for money spent on feed the amount of grain fed has to be decided by the amount of milk each cow gives the old rule of thumb that a pound of grain for each four or five pounds of milk isnt too bad but the really good feeders will now also take into account the butterfat of the milk butterfat has to be con sidered but with it added the old rule doesnt hold up a table cf figures has to be used we have uptodate figures of this kind and would be glad to dis cuss them with any dairyman anxious to check his feeding programme dairy farmers are victims of bad publicity every time radio active fallout gets in the news strontium 90 levels are always given for milk which leads peo ple to believe that milk is the only carrier this is far from the truth because the high level of calcium in milk nulli fies to a large extent the effect of strontium milk just hap pens to be used as a measuring stick for all food products the fact is that the radio active hazard in milk is much less than in many other foods radio log youth time cfgm toronto ont sunday 9 00 am chuc cobourg ont sunday 915 am cjkl kirk- land lake ont saturday 11 15 a m cfch north bay ont sat urday 915 am cjet smith falls
