study 745 pm everyone vvelcome mrs g sisco heads united church women the inaugural meeting of the newly formed organization the united church women was held wednesday evening january 1 in the united church about one hundred and twentyfive women were in attendance the meeting was opened by rev cruikshank who called on mrs reg button a member of the nominating committee to present the slate of officers for this new organization which is as follows pres mrs gordon sisco 1st vice pres mrs cruik shank 2nd vice pres mrs fred williams 3rd vice pres mrs harold spofford rec sec retary mrs john williamson corresp secretary mrs nor man hill treasurer mrs wal ter atkinson group leaders mrs s crouch mrs t wedsel- toft mrs r mercer mrs d bacon committees christian educa tion mrs j ogilvie nominat ing mrs n smith finance mrs a woods press mrs n bakei manse mrs n o boyle friendship visiting mrs a campbell program mrs r winterstem flowers mrs ray holden membership and recruiting mrs s hast ings literature and periodicals mrs r button the new president mrs sisco was then called on to conduct the remainder of the meeting in her opening remaiks mrs sisco said this is a great hon our to be chosen the first presi dent of your new organization the united church women it is also a great responsibility but one that is shared with dedi cated christianwomen who will uphold me and all the new exec utive with their prayers their sympathy and willing help it will take the dedicated devotion and faith of every woman in this congregation to rture and guide this new movement into a great organization that will en rich all our lives and our com munity the worship service was con ducted by mrs roy dowswell this is a new year and a new era for the women of our chu rch said the speaker this is the year that has been on the planning boards of our head office for 19 years the inaug ural year of united church wo men in our new organization we must be willing to take a part it will not be possible to enjoy this newer fuller church life unless we are willing to put something of ourselves into it when next you are asked to help swallow those refusals and say ill try the results will spell success for our new organ ization and will lead you to a newer better and fuller church life a poem by mrs r winter- stein a solo by mrs r hamm ond and a vote of thanks by mrs l hears moled singer good home training is the most essential part of a boys life stated reeve timbers at the father and son night held m the markham um church he went on to remind the group of 100 that the future depends on the boys of today it was an interesting note that reeve timbers was one of the first students of the mongolia sun day school councillor charles hoover mentioned that he had no boys of his own but he was proud to have brought along two for the father and son din ner mr hoover advised the boys that we will see the impor tance of how we live later on in life a poor record is lecture on methods the markham um church was packed to capacity last sun day evening to hear the noted song writer and gospel singer mr stuart hamblen due to weather conditions mr hamblen was almost thursday evening mrs steckleys sisters and husbands entertained them to a turkey supper at their home on saturday evening they were entertained at the home of their daughter shirley and friend miss ruth fox in tor onto and again turkey was on the menu mr harold steckley and family of hamilton were guests as well as several friends of shirley and ruth mr and mrs ellesworth kef- fer of markham and pike son of mr and mrs reginald pike toronto ont the marriage to take place march 10th 19g2 lome gillion passes suddenly in 58th year mr lome richard gillion 159 rupert st stouffvllle passed away suddenly at his home on sunday jan 21 1962 in his 58th year he was a son of the late mr and mrs edward gil lion and is survived by his wife the former annie meyer a bro ther revis of mount albert and a sister nellie of oakville the late lome gillion was a gard ener and interested in the work of the local horticultural so ciety he was identified with the united church the funeral was held on tues day jan 23 from the chapel of l e oneill in charge of rev cruikshank and rev d davis pallbearers were messers ar thur knight gordon brown bob macaloney george tim bers joe lewis and howard do ner interment was in stouff ville cemetery local and personal happenings demolition work has been started on the old queens court residence on main street mrs will swain who has been hospitalized this
