councillor m ward 2 for the past four years is the new deputy- reeve in the township of pickering for the x9ol term he defeated his closest opponent mrs jean l mcpherson by a scam 52 votes mr james total was 1199 mrs mcpherson had 11 17 a third candidate wm kaii grieve trailed th neld with 6s2 ah former councillors weie returned many boyes defeased miss violet swan 306 to 154 in ward 3 ross deakin was given strong support in ward a and swept the post over his rival john campbell by a 170 voie majority councillor deakin polled 509 mr campbell counted 239 a much closer contest was waged betweth councillor clifford laycox in ward 5 and mr reginald boek mr laycox was the ultimate winner by a majority of iis votes reeve sheiman scott and councillors harvey spang and mhtou mowbray had earlier received acclamations position in doubt the office of deputyreeve was in doubt until the results of the final polls had been ievealed hie lead changed hands on a number of occasions mr james received strong suppoil in the urban aiea of west rouge where he more than doubled the ballot return of his opponent mrs mcpherson in the three west roug polls he revived 282 votes mrs mcpherson collected only 113 with the exception of this particular area there was no cut and dried pattern of support for either can didate mrs mcpherson gained a majority in claremon atha and whitevale mr james was ahad at green river mt xion kinsale brougham and audley he was well supported at his home poll at the brock road mrs mcpherson on the other hand came on strongly in many southern centres in cluding glengrove fairport and rosebank any advantage garnered at these points failed to overbalance the scales that swung heavily in mr james favour in the vvoil rouge at the majority of other polls candidate at the glengrove school councillor deakin swept the poll by 113 to 10 in suite of the setback mr campbell suggested that he would again return to the political scene close contest the three west rouge polls that threw their ballot support behind councillor edgar james also endorsed incumbent can didate clifford laycox he defeated mr reginald bozek 583 to 435 in a close contest mr boek moved out front in the early returns fiom the constituencies of altona road and rosebank the majority at these polls melted away under mr laycox sweep in west rouge questions split one question on the landslide victory over his opponent mr john campbell councillor deakin polled a total of 509 voles as compared with 23 for mr campbell workers union clashes with township council the pickering twp road de partment presently operating under a union agreement ap proved this year by council has presented two further recom mendations for consideration of ihe members the employees represented by mr kingston appeared before a regular meet ing of council on monday night mr kingston the spokesman requested that a s500 standby time should still be applicable and that roadmen having com pleted 10 years of service should be entitled to three weeks holi days with pay five employees are involved in the latter re quest dep reeve ross hawthorne suggested that due to the late ness in ihe 1560 term
