fans of thomas huraa sons springfield elgin county october tjtk to ma russian people dont want war claim of unionville tourists the russians dont want war in the opinion of ac and mrs kennedy of unionville who have just returned from ar extended visit to the soviet republics they think they can win us to their way of life by showing what it accomplishes for them says mr kennedy the kennedys were the only canadian members of a group of 25 mostly americans who liad free run of russia they travelled for three weeks by rail bus plane boat train car and foot over thousands of miles from leningrad to the black sea they took over 900 coloured photographs and will be show ing them in the clinic auditor ium throughout the winter the russian trip was part of a 20000mile trip that took them over the whole of europe in the three summer months you get what you look for says arthur kennedy we hap pened to be looking for the good and we saw lots of it but there is lots of bad too they saw a 2000aere collect ive farm where the mothers worked in the fields and the chil dren were looked after in nurs eries there were women in the fields with sickles with two combines running around the same field everybody must work so thats why the women were using the only tools they knew how the collective farm was start ed in 192s and demolished in the last war it has all the most modern farm equipment includ ing milking machines and mech anized cleaning equipment for the stables mrs kennedy was worried about the children in the nurs eries it is the mothers choice whether they are left for the day or for the week and she fell that they needed their mo thers love more than they were getting however they seemed happy and healthy and from six years old they make their own beds and do a beautiful job there was a general feeling of prosperity and confidence that they are going places said the kennedys but everywhere you went you saw evidence of ter rible brutality under czars judging from what they saw the kennedys feel that the rus sians are not as good cooks as we are they dont use enough fresh fruits and vegetables for westerners liking the food is simple and there is lots of it breadcheese and eggs particu larly the russian soup was a meal in itself they found the russian peo ple friendly and anxious to show off their achievements they were lined up three blocks long and six people wide to get into the lenin and stalin tombs in the red square but cheerfully stood aside when the tourists with ho direction of a guide broke their lines to get in ahead of them the people dont seem to be greedy for tips but they do love to get souvenirs of america says arthur he says the next time he goes he is going to take a bushel of gum because the youngsters justlove it mrs kennedy asked a maid in a hotel to iron one of arthurs shirts and as a tip gave her a pair of earrings the girl was so thrilled she hugged mrs ken nedy and kissed her soundly on both cheeks the kennedys scarcely saw anything they wanted to buy in russia the stores are filled with merchandise but it is pret ty commonplace and not many luxuries were to be seen the clothing was coarse workaday type without much style mrs kennedy says it was not unusual to see a group of three or fsur women on the street all dressed in the same piece of material which they had made up and not very skilfully either she says they seem to be more interested in being clothed than in being dressed the older generation seems to be living in the past and are al lowed to do what they want even going to church its the younger generation that the go vernment is interested in and these are provided with splendid educational facilities they attended a fresh ait- camp at the tourists own re quest as this was not on the planned trip and mrs kennedy says she saw there the nicest children she has ever seen the children greeted them with a song called friendship and peace and many of them are studying english and were de lighted to practise on the visi tors they were genuinely frien dly and kept saying over and over were so glad you came to see our eamp the tourists were quite broken up by this show of affection on the part of the young children they saw no evidence of hate being instilled into anyone wantedoidest fordson a tractor dating back to the close of world war 1 could win some farmer in
