be told it should be told partly because it never has and partly because this year the end ing is appropriate to the story it begins with many unrelated announcements and requests a small boy warhoops through the kitchen door and yells hes going to be an indian mother takes half her mind off the pies and asks when on thanksgiving is the reply good enough that makes sense sixyearold sense in another kitchen another mo ther is informed that hemis- chievous daughter is about to become a puritan she doesnt believe it in the days following there are strange requests for black dresses feathers a tur key a pie and then the merch ants feel the pinch an under taker a garage owner the own er of an appliance store sundry farmers all discover suddenly that they have a very important part to play in the recreating of the first thanksgiving cedar groves float for markham fair parade the wheels are in mo tion but they seem to be rid ing off in all directions the only person with a fairly clear picture the person who hopes to hoop all these wheels into one yard is the teacher mrs smith has been contem plating this particular thanks giving for weeks iong before school opened she was musing on the idea en route to london while the farmers were bring ing in sheaves of oats and was prompted into climbing a fence and parting a farmer from a few of his sheaves grain in sheaves is hard to come by in a combine district recesses and noon hours ev ery spare moment is soon pack ed with plans and every talent comes into play as banners cos tumes and properties begin to materialize out of odds and ends eager minds and busy hands all mind you with no grade eights and only two grade seven pupils at this point in the project mothers are just plain con fused they translate half un derstood or excitedly delivered messages as best they can and do as they are told even grand mothers are pressed into serv ice the day before the big par ade the trailer is in the school yard and basic decorating must begin such a trailer george carr has lent his spanking new freshly painted red trailer with a matching rack at each end beautiful too beautiful no one has the courage to drive the first nail into such a fine piece of equipment aubrey lapp and mike dean are sosd into plant ing a tree at front and back and fastening 16 feet of mason- he to each side and some at each end the challenge is to do it without driving too many nails into such obviously unmarred newness aubrey thrives on that kind of challenge and two child ren are despatched for baling twine and the job is done but problems keep arising there is a need for corn who still has corn in the field how can the big plaster turkey be anchored to the table so it wont slide into markham main st one little girl has not been well and must ride not walk give her a doll and a cradle and put her on stage what could be more appropriate at the first thanksgiving someone must get artificial grass from the gen erous undertaker will thumb tacks go into masonite yes if you put it soft side out will the wind blow the banners to shreds get the scotch tape the day arrives parents wear ing anxious frowns drive the children to school with one eye on a heavy sky on parade day after weeks of sun it is rain ing this error in the weather mans judgment docs not bo ther the children one whit they dont believe in rain it isnt exactly a case of ignoring it they just dont believe it in the morning twelve little boys come to school and twelve little indians leave war paint must have been conceived by the in dians to bolster the morale of notsobrave braves at noon the sky is grey the float is at morgan park un finished indians and puritans are at large all over the village gulping down hurried lunches staring into mirrors hoisting up skirts tying bonnets larry reesor is washing jo cham pions tractor at one oclock a miracle takes place suddenly the pieces all fit together suddenly the bon nets are framing the faces of angels the indians are subdued and the turkey reposes ban ners fly the band plays the parade begins and the sun blesses the occasion gloriously down the main street of mark ham goes the first thanksgiv ing plymouth 1620 keeping company with canadas fur traders mother goose and can adas book week the red cross why father saves canadas resources all colourful and cleverly executed ideas a little boy bored with marching gets a bigger kick out of stepping on the shoes of the little girl in front she has to stop every few feet and put her shoes back on the band plays on and off and on a little girl trips and sends her basket of fruit scat tering over the road and rips her crepe paper skirt if you ride the float you save your feet but freeze if you waik it is tiring but warmer do you see anyone you know dont turn your head dont wave dont even smile press on to the fair grounds now the best is over and the worst to come waiting interminable waiting while the judges decide who wins first prize this year one minute your own is the very best float of all one min ute later they all look far bet ter than yours a hush in the crowd spreads like the measles the announce ment is made first prize goes to ss 20 for the first thanks giving the story ends but it isnt just our story it is the story of every float on main street last friday afternoon the sadness is that only one has the happiest
