button- ville is still collecting his thoughts and sorting out im pressions after a flying 16day tour of the scardanavian count ries and russia flying in every sense of the word for the group he accompanied covered thous ands of air miles in the time they were abroad busses were used occasionally when the pro ject to be visited lay within a hundred miles or so of a main centre but for the most part lowflying planes were their transport the desire to visit the soviet union to see farming there first hand was born a year ago when mr hooper visited the worlds fair at brussels and was intrig ued with the farm machinery in the russian exhibit there he said it made our equipment look like toys the opportunity came sooner than he expected early this year tv and radio station cknx at wingham an nounced they would sponsor a russian agricultural tour for 15 independent ontario farmers this group the first of its kind in either canada or the states would pay their own expenses be responsible to no govern mental party and be free to make their own assessment of everything they would see on the trip the date for the tour would be late summer for mr hooper there were several obstacles as far as time was concerned for one thing the harvest season was later than it had been for several years and mr hooper is a farm er then too his youngest daughter mary was planning her wedding for september 17 and the party might not return in time for him to be present these difficulties were ironed out with the help of mr hoop ers son george who agreed to keep the home fires burning and the cooperation of the trav el bureau which arranged spec ial flight home direct from mos cow several days in advance of the main party mr vaughan douglas of cknx organized the tour and the nine member group left malton the evening of august 29 their first stop was in den mark where they had a brief view of farm operation said mr hooper in denmark farm ing is the main occupation even their hydro is imported from sweden further on their flight the party stopped at stockholm sweden where mr hooper talk ed with an old friend mr kings- ed mortar was poured crops were harvested reads were be ing built streetcars were oper ated by women when asked where the nien were mr hoop ers reply was that he didnt know occassionally one would be seen driving a truck or oper ating a machine in moscow a city of s000000 people there are 12 churches and in all russia there is one tv channel one newspaper and one radio all state controlled passports were taken from the members of the canadian party when they arrived at their moscow hotel something which is not done in other coun tries and the group was ac companied at all times by at least one tourist guide some times two or three these were young women who were anxious to increase their knowledge of english the farms in russia are either cooperative or state owned the state owns all the land but in cooperative farming work ers own the buildings stock and equipment while in state farms the state owns everything co operative farmers must also provide their own roads and keep them up farm units range from 30000 acres to 200000 acres and in one cornfield mr hooper viewed six hundred acres the group saw only one vill age in their travels they were taken to a tractor factory but were not allowed inside and they were taken through a mile- long margarine factory agri cultural products take a top pri ority as good nutrition for the people is considered of prime importance they use a great quantity of buttermilk cheese and eggs but the use of marg arine is forbidden except in coo king it is considered injurious especially to young people somewhere along his journey mr hooper met a russian who had spent more than thirty years farming in alberta and has now returned to his native land the man owns a small house there but not the land up on which it is located of all the countries mr hoo per has visited approximately 15 he says that as far as cli mate countryside trees and crops are concerned russia is most like canada even the weeds were familiar lambs quarter bindweed ragweed the meals were hearty and for breakfast the party found themselves eating beef and fried jim abelt phone 237 stouffville 1 fmli itrpbfree service jfchoin still in use p 1 f jraafler 10 years iime iixj sun life assurance company of was perhaps an omelet or cheese when asked what impressed him most about russia mr hooper was undecided he felt he would like to see more of their educational system and if he ever goes back for a second visit he hopes to become more enlightened on this program returning on wednesday of last week by direct flight from mos cow mr hooper arrived home in time to take part in his daughters wedding festivities here of the toronto and york roads commission and presently the canadian ambassador to swed en from stockholm they flew to helsinki finland and then on to russia in moscow said mr hooper
