afternoon proved to be an interestitng community event as more than three hund red persons visited the new premises during the ceremony in the afternoon and during the evening cuttling the libbon to offi cially mark the opening was mr murray jones commission er of planning for metropoli tan toronto mr jones was in troduced by councillor william parsons the speaker pointed out the fine relationship which had always existed between met ro authorities stouffville coun cil and stouffville planning board and complimented coun cil on the fine way in which the municipal affairs had been han dled he said that metro was lending a hand in preparing plans for stouffvilles annexa tion which is expected to be heard this fall ml jones also commented on the virtues of slow growth he said that too rapid urbanization could destroy some of the his tory which is part of a good rural way of life mr jones ex pressed the view that the loca tion of the new offices was ex cellent and added much to the community he suggested that at some future date the front area might be remodelled inlo a plaza he suggested that if anything was ever done to alter the former towp office building the clock tower should most definitely be relocated such a clock was one of the distinc tions of town life which should not be lost he said the ceremony wns opened with prayer by rev douglas davis who also gave the dedica tion prayer the guests were introduced by reeve gar leh man and the dedication by rev mr davis was assisted by coun cillor ken laushway chairman of the property committee councillor laushway review ed hip rapid growth of stouff ville he said that the need for better council and office accom modation was one that had been felt for a long time and he sug gested that some future coun cil might proceed to make still further improvements council lor laushway thanked the reeve clerk and architect for their co operation in bringing the build ing to its present stale brief comments were made by warden w l clark of york county major a a lex mac kenzie mpp for north york and former reevcs henry og- den and elmer daniels the presentation of a gold key to the building was made to reeve lehman by the archi tect alexander b leman ap preciation was expressed to air murray jones by deputyreeve ken wagg a presentation of a flag and photograph of the queen was made to reeve and lunch was provided by the la dies of the stouftville legion auxiliary passing at intersection brings fine in court a severe reprimand was ac companied by a s19 fine in but- tonville traffic court on friday morning when john kish a dri ver of a loaded sod truck was convicted of passing a car in the middle of an intersection the incident occurred at the corner of don mills road and no 7 highway on may 2lst pb john mccague of the markham twp dept told the court that the truck veered into the left lane to pass a south bound vehicle he said that the other driver pulled his car off the road to decoration service on sunday afternoon the grounds were in excellent condition and showed the care being given the cemetery by caretaker fred pil- key the weatherman cooperated on sunday and a large gather ing numbering several hundred attended the afternoon service so great was the profusion of flowers that one was struck with a pleasant wave of scent immediately on entering the grounds rev arthur walsh of the united missionary church de livered the afternoon sermon and mrs walsh provided a vo cal solo tn the morning music was supplied on the elec tric organ by mrs joyce bram- ham friends from many nearby centres including a number from toronto visited graves of friends and relatives and com- mented on the tidy appeaiance of the cemetery the winter ice storms played havoc with a number of the trees but they have now all been trimmed to a more respectable height and little sign of damage remains health unit recommends all homes enter sewers the york county health un it has recommended to stouff ville municipal council that a bylaw be passed requiring all householders to be hooked up to the sewerage system by a specified time in their latest report to town the health unit advises that there are unsani tary conditions existing in town several householders have been charged under the public health act and in each case a convic tion has been registered and a fine paid the report stated that charges are now pending ag ainst another half dozen home owners whose septic tanks are creating an unsanitary condi tion both for themselves and their neighbors the health unit advised coun cil that progress has been slow against offenders many have failed to carry out promises to rectify bad conditions after they have been warned councillor parsons said that a bylaw could be passed which would protect but would not make it compulsory to enter the sewerage system the health unit has that power now to protect if the con ditions are bad enough replied councillor laushway its pretty tough on some families to force them to spend three or four hundred dollars to put in the sewers commented reeve lehman its pretty hard on their neighbors in some cases too if theyre not made to hook up said councillor parsons councillor laushway said that it was difficult to act in some eases as the owners had systems wlikh were just within the law and that was all deputyreeve wagg agreed with reeve lehman that a by law forcing everyone to hook up could be 2 hardship were here to protect those who have proper sewer connec tions as well said councillor parsons if we dont do some thing itll he a continual prob lem clerk ralph corner told coun cil that he believed without making a close check that about 60 of the homes were now hooked up councillor laushway com mented that he doubted if 50 of the older homes were in theres a lui in the east end of town not hooked up said coun cillor parsons we owe a duty to the resi dents who are hooked up to be protected against sanitary of fenders said councillor par sons its easy to see why the health unirwant the bylaw it would relieve them of a lot of trouble but it would only trans fer it to us these people would still have to be charged said deputyreeve wagg no decision on gocart race track in whitchurch whitchurch township council has not been able to come to any decision as yet on the grant ing of permission to mr shields of the shields subdivision don mills rd for the operation of a gocart race track council had refused permission on the initial application but had con sented to give the request fur ther consideration it was noted thal pickering twp had agreed to make the racing legal mr shields stated that he would construct the i rack at a cost of 3000 and would have the agency for the sale of the cars at gavins service station and restaurant which he owns he told mr shields that the health unit had asked lhat he make certain improvements in his swimming pool which would cost him 2500 he said the two pools did not pay but with the added attraction of the racing he thought they would councillor farquharson ask ed mr shields what he would do if the license was granted this year and not renewed in 1961 mr shields said this was a risk he was prepared to ac- proposed outside subdivision poses problem for school board a subdivision proposed for the former lloyd farm north of town on highway 17 is pos ing a problem for the stouff ville public school board chair man of the board cecil hend ricks and mrs ethel mole ap peared before stouffville muni cipal council on thursday eve ning socking direction the pro posed subdivision would con tain 70 residential lots in addi tion to 26 acres of commercial and industrial land it is sug gested that 20 homes would be built in i96j 25 in 1962 and 25 in 1963 the public school board isi in rccrip nf a communication from the whitchurch township planning board advising of the subdivision and asking if the school board can accommodate the pupils who would come from the development the subdivision while not within the corporation is within the stouffville public school section it is also outside the area that is proposed for annexation i would think that any sub division there would need to meet stouffville requirements and no doubi these people would want to be annexed at some future date in order to get services said councillor parsons mr hendricks said that the board was presently prepared 5 for some lucky person some lucky person is going lo be 550 richer this saturday when the main si merchants believe the subdivision could be stop ped but our attitude could have some bearing on the speed of the development council agreed that future ar rangements should be made for a meeting with the for council on friday evening but no decision was reached want better roads mr eugene grills placed be fore council the matter of plac ing the roads in the shields sub division in better condition the roads are at present 18 feet of surface and the department has refused to pay a subsidy on any thing under 22 feet mr grills said that the rate payers were desperate after the heavy snow of last winter and agreed to pay the 50 them selves if the council would put it on the tax bills for two years reeve richardson said that council could not set up a program for another council to follow mr grills said that he now had the consent of the ratepay ers the amount of work was not large and he asked that it be done this season council agreed to arrange for the work subject to the approval of the highways dept that the work done will place the roads in such condition that they can be added to the township road system trucker charges court profitmaking fined 49 for overloading carl kovacic 24 york ave toronto the driver of a trac tortrailer gravel transport charged that the buttonville traffic court was a profitmak ing organization after he was fined 519 and costs by magis trate kelly on friday morning he was convicted of carrying an overload of 7000 pounds mr kovacic stated that the weight of his load on the scale at the commercial sand and gravel pit was less than the weight that showed on the scale on the don mills ttoad he arg ued that the latter scale was faulty pc john mccague of the markham twp dept told the court that the scale on the don mills road was tested month ly by the dept of transport sgt wm shearri said that he personally checked it from time to time the driver charged that the pit scale was checked daily he produced a weigh bill as evidence if im fined anything im being fined wrongly stated the defendant magistrate kelly contended that he could take only the evi dence that was presented by the officer he noted however that it was strange that there
