mcteague electric curl ing trophy at a mixed bonspiel at the whitby curling club it was the second occasion the tro phy had been up for competi tion the trophy and first prizes went to hoods foursome debbi wilkes 14 union ville recently returned from the world figure skating cham pionships at vancouver after skating in pairs competition and placing 11th guy here describes his and debbis career as pairs skaters and what it feels like to be a cliampionship competi tor it certainly was the experience of a lifetime to skate with peo ple from all over the world at the world championships every event was planned down to the last detail vancouver is a beau tiful city and the people are very hospitable we placed 11th in this comp etition but were pleased with what we did we were very hap py to be competing with all these people the best pairs from can ada the usa austria and ger many our career together began in october 1958 when debbi and i began skating together at union ville skating club we practised three times a week with priv ate lessons from bruce hyland soon without much difficulty we learned the basic pair lifts and decided to enter the senior pair division of the central ontario championships we got down to hard work and soon had a three and a half minute routine to music our music was excerpts from the famous sleeping beauty bal let mr hyland was pleased with our progress and asked us if we would consider entering the junior pairs division of the canadian championships this we did and only three months later we won the event we were impressed with our victory at nnranda quebec where the championships were held jan 29 to 31 1959 the next day brought an even greater surprise when we were asked to represent can ada in the north american championships to ba held in toronto the following week end feb 6 and 7 we arrived home on the mon day with a tusy week of prac tice ahead since the north am erican championship was a sen ior competition we now needed a fiveminute roine with hard work we had it completed by- wed ncsday the next few days we went through the routine again and again in order to be able to breathe properly saturday night we placed fifth and were pleased with our and that we look forward to marks and placing this com- skating competitions next year claremont wins 86 a torrid community league hockey game was transformed into a tag team wrestling match on tuesday night as stouftville and claremont players engaged in a midice freeforali the brawl broke out in the dying seconds of the group championship playoff opener the officials hal gibson and polly minton immediately halted the match claremont claimed the victory by a score of s6 referee minton ordered a penalty shot after he claimed stouffville forward howard forgie had thrown physical violence stouffville netminder geo martin cross checked forward bob cherry brother jim cherry re taliated defenceman geo third joined the fray but was partially disrobed in the melee claremont goalie wes evans completed a thirty yard dash into the very centre of the skirmish to add to the confusion net minder martin after clipping a few rivals with some wellplaced jabs was pinned for the ten count by rival puckstopper evans vern ferguson a usually mild- mannered performer was also involved but his ad versary is yet unknown howard forgie although eject ed from the contest a few minutes earlier returned to the ice to watch the proceedings from a ringside seat other players milled around in the fight zone but none seemed particularly anxious to become involved in the nontitle bout gloves sticks and sweaters were littered about the ice peace and quiet was finally restored when coaches loyd pascoe of claremont and don gibson of stouffville herded their proteges into their respective dressing rooms the series will resume on tuesday night of next week at 815 pm it is a best 3 out of 5 games- cftiremont now holds a one game edge although the fisticuffs was the feature performance on the nights card the hockey action was packed with excitement from the opening whistle at one point in the contest stouffville held a 63 lead in the second and third periods claremont rallied to fire fiveinarow jim cherry netted three singles came from the sticks of dean evans stan benson jack redshaw vern fer guson and bob cherry harry young scored a pair for the merchants linde the night was a picture effort vern ferguson and grant jones played up to their usual form ron graham and harry young were effective for stouffville bill allan stouff ville rightwinger suffered a leg injury late in the first period and his absence from the lineup hurt the mer chants changes goalie martin after a disappointing start looked brilliant in the stouffville net wes evans also made some barbara wagner and bob paul and the brother and sister team of otto and mario jelinek it was here that the canadian figure skat ing association announced the 1960 world team members and debbie and i were proud and thrilled to be part of the team as you know the world and olympic champions bob paul and barbara wagner have re tired from competition making debbi and myself very happy as now we are the second best duo in canada the next year looks very pro mising with the canadian cham pionship to be held in lachinc quebec the north american in the united states and the world championships in
