parents and the general public viewed the fine display of work prepared by both the pupils and members of the staff the open house was part of a provincewide programme to mark education week across police force caused by the resignation of constable ran dal a bylaw was passed at the regular meeting of council on thursday evening engaging the new constable at a salary for 195s of s3300 constable that in view of the opening of water mains for construction work he thought it advisable to continue the system of chlorination chairman dr s s ball re quested that if possible an in ventory of the stock of supplies on hand should be taken secretary storey replied that an inventory was taken at the end of the year but in view of the fact that stock had to be located in four different build ings it was impossible to keep a daily record he suggested that the commission should work towards having a build ing of their own sufficiently large to contain all the stock on hand dr ball also inquired expected to convene on wednesday night of this week to settle salary demands of the local high school staff the board members were shocked two weeks ago when teachers presented them with demands for an increase which meant 700 raise including the annual increment teachers also asked to have the maximum number of days sick leave boosted to more than one hundred days which board members point out has never yet been reached stouffville board has been in close- touch with the trustees association which has been battling the teachers union in an effort to hold the expense line with north york board of education dispute serving as a test case the local demands were ex pected to be thoroughly aired this wednesday night and con crete offers made to the teach ers by the board i council curling a bonspiel for councils of york county is being held at newmarket on march 14th one rink from each council the matter of stouffville represen tation was left to councillor gar lehman who is the local boards most regular curler victoria square residents planning community park stouffville hockey fans will be leaving by bus for the hockey game in campbellford on thurs day the bus will leave the dept of agriculture should be approached for help but reeve clark said that their rep resentatives had already looked over the land councillor mumberson stated that certain sums of money had been collected from the cachey estates subdivision near vic toria square in lieu of park land being donated and it was his opinion that this money should be spent in this area other members of council concurred in his suggestion the deputation agreed to seek a site and present figures to council as suggested concern over pickering twp tax arrears messrs manteith and mon teith auditors for the township of pickering appeared before council at a special meeting on monday night and presented the 1957 audited statement the firm expressed some concern ov- or the municipalities tax debt and pointed out that the arrears i showed an increase since 1956 the total of uncollected taxes as of dec 31st 1957 was 19577632 he stated that this matter should concern the members since any lengthy secord needed little introduction to residents of this area dividing his time between a busy animal hospital and the thickly wooded shores of his pond on the 3rd of uxbridge dr secord has realized a dream which took shape with his first glimpse of the secluded property surround ing the whites sawmill while maintaining a sanctuary for canadian waterfowl it gives him access to the study and photography of their habits during migration periods hun dreds of canada geese seek refuge here annually pausing to rest and feed unmolested for several seasons a canada gander unable to fly as the result of a wing injury has mated with a migrating goose and brooded successfully under his watchful eye a desire to increase the enjoyment of his hobby by sharing it with others led him to record on stouffville has been condemned by the york county health unit as a nursing home this action was taken following inspection of the premises by dr d a hutchison of newmarket the investigation was ordered following the death over the weekend of one patient hetta may wilson so coroner dr blair mitchell of stouffville will file a complete report death has been attributed to mal nutrition two other elderly patients have been removed from the east end home mrs barbara jacques 75 and mr charles willson 75 were taken by ambulance to the york county hospital newmarket mrs jacques was in an unconscious condition but according to hos pital authorities is improving stouffville police chief frank edwards is working in cooperation with mr arleigh armstrong of the crown attorneys office in newmarket an inquest has been ordered and will be held in stouffville on wednesday evening march 26th at 730 pm a com plete report will be presented at that time mr and mrs mcginty were the former operators of the maple glenn rest home in gormley they have five chit dren dr hutchison of the jrk county health unit told the tribune that conditions in the stouffville home were not good he said that they were much below the minimum stand ard required by the health unit for the operation of a rest home i have ordered the pa tients removed he said bus load hockey fans to see bantam playoff for proposed in town parking bylaw changes in the stouffville parking bylaw have been pro posed by the bylaw committee of the municipal council and these were presented to council on thursday evening by coun cillor ken wagg chairman of the committee chief clause in the amended bylaw will allow two hour parking every day on main st from albert st in the west end to park rd with the exception of the north side of the hill be tween midtown garage and the cnr another change is the elimina tion of the former loading areas in the centre of the business sec tion chairman wagg stated it was believed these areas were partial to certain merchants and the committee proposed their elimination parking will be prohibited on the south side of main st east of park rd and likewise at the west end west of
