200000 sec ondary school students in on tario is going to be longer he said the schools admin istration act calls for a ten- month school year and hence forth grades 9 10 11 and 12 will not finish courses until about june 12 instead of june 6 examinations will begin after june 13 grade 13 students will begin writing major examina tions june 16 instead of june 10 or earlier as has been recent practice for most grades it will mean four or five days more of school for those taking special sub jects the school year may be extended to june 27 dr dunlop said it was his departments firm policy to work for a longer and more efficient school year to put in more time and more work and with more examinations this isa first step toward achieving the objective of a full 10month school year he said the minister explained that representatives of four organi zations had discussed the plan with him at queens park they were the ontario school super intendents association the ont secondary school teachers federation the ontario secon dary school headmasters asso ciation and the ontario school trustees association all of these representatives were in favor of the change we proposed dr dunlop said the minister said that at one time pupils were kept until the last day of june arid wrote ex aminations in july complainfs brought a reduction of the school year and examinations were written in june then stu dents in grades 9 10 11 and 12 not writing examinations hav ing been promoted through rec ommendation were allowed out as soon as the grade 13 ex aminations began this meant a considerable loss in instruc tion time dr dunlop com mented this year he continued if the system had been followed all the pupils in grades 9 10 11 and 12 not writing examina tions would have been out of school by june 6 ontario now has one of the longest secondary school years on the continent last year it ran 194 or 195 days the objec tive is to bring it to an average of 200 days a directive is being issued to prinpipals directing that exam inations taken by the majority of candidates shall not be writ ten before june 16 no pupils are excused from writing grade 12 subjects or the diploma subjects of grade 11 all final examinations in grades 9 to 12 shall take place after june 13 in the case of schools where grade 11 and 12 students are not subject to the recommendation system exam inations may be held during the week of june 9 i want ted macoonald who is in charge of united coopera tives propane operation said we will be able to purchase our supplies direct from the re finery an increase in the use of propane gas by ontario farmers for their farm opera tions including brooder heating tobacco drying and heating of farm houses with our own bulk storage cylinder form or in bulk a new bulk delivery truck for de livering propane from the guelph plant to customers has been purchased by united co operatives the truck operates on propane gas we will be offering service from our new plant through lo cal cooperatives for a radius of approximately 75 miles around guelph mr macdonald said this will enable some 40000 ontario farmers to take advan tage of propane gas either in bulk or in cylinders one of the main advantages of propan gas is that it does not depreciate equipment as rapidly as does other fuels particularly gaso line and it is much cleaner some women pick
