20000 the houses stand on onethird acre lots each has a frontage j of 125 feet they were financed under the central housing and mortgage corporation this is not the first group to have solved its personal housing shor tage in this manner the origi nal one was at ottawa in 1952 when under the leadership of bishop morocco 36 houses were built cooperatively bishop mo rocco the founder of cooperat ive housing headed the depart ment of social action at st patricks college ottawa at 1 that time upon completion of this first subdivision a booklet i was published by the group so that future cooperative hous ing groups could avoid some of the pitfalls it mad encountered it was this booklet which form ed the basis of study and dis cussion for the weekly series of lectures at st michaels college anyone interested in obtain ing a home economically is free to attend said ed paquet the villa nova coop treasurer the course and the housing scheme are open to all regardless of race color or creed but they must be prepared for sore mus cles and plenty of work he added as he rubbed his calloused hands construction was started in august 1955 and since then each man has worked approxi mately 1600 hours all of that time was spent in evenings weekends and annual holidays from their fulltime jobs each family bought a share in the villa nova company for 10 but paid for his lot his labor was valued at 1 an hour and this work equity replaced the cash down payment required in conventional housing pro jects explained mr paquet as a company we bought ma terials in quantity lots and hired professionals to do the major construction electrical work and plastering apart from that we have done the rest of the build ing ourselves no one knew which house was his added president wm dionrie could have been avoided mr sykes told the conference that his organization had appeal ed directly to premier leslie frost and agricultural minister w a goodfellow for legislative action to help reduce the num ber of farm accidents and deaths we have studied the problem for some time mr sykes said we believe that the provincial government should adopt some form of a farm safety act sim ilar to the handle if it ever gets out of control a tractor appears simple to drive mr sykes added and it is tractors are easy to start and stop but in driving a trac tor during a normal farm day- there are hundreds of errors the man at the wheel can make and one of these errors could cost him his life mr sykes said his association felt that before a person gets behind the steering wheel of a tractor he must know certain definite things about how the vehicle will operate and should be operated under different con ditions in other words mr sykes added he must know what the tractor can do and what it cant do mr sykes said he felt the rec ommendation concerning the english language was important because many new canadians both on farms and on industrial jobs are driving tractors i the problem here is that these men do not understand our language mr sykes said they cannot read our road signs or instructions regarding the ve hicle they are driving but they start driving tractors and bull dozers and before they know it their life in the new world ends before it has really begun mr sykes said the associa tions third recommendation was one of extreme importance ringwood mrs fred steokley church just imagine cars for 125 a week then re duced to os cents a week thl is what happened im told in jacksonville fla when some of the sharper operators got in a freeforall or almost free mood one arm offered cars for sale with rood tradeins at sjl21 n week then nnot her outfit beat lilin out by offering cars for 05 cents a week it sounded fine until you read the fine print then you saw that after 12 months of these nextlonothing payments the entire balance came due that had to be paid off in another 12 months the customer still had lo pay for the car and that although it sounds a little trite is still true they mill had to pay for it some way of anyone around here i think weve been the leaders in making the ownership of a car a realizable goal for the largest number of people but when you start to fool the people youre doing no one any good you do a real service i think when ion offer the lowest kkai prices on cars with financing terms to make it a sensible pnj asyoiigo proposition our
