Acting on information coming to the attention of Chief Greer the po- lice made a raid on a couple of places down the river on Friday evening last and made rich hauls, including a couple of stills and much liquor in the making and other liquor fully made] First Chief Greer, Constable 'Rayeroft', and Offieer R. Allen went down the: river visiting a shack about five miles from town. It was some distance into the bush from the house occupied by Messrs. E. Colborne and Mose Char.. trand. Colborne and Chartrand were placed under arrest for violation of the law in connection with the posses- sion of a still and a large quantity of liquor. When the police arrived the making of liquor seemed to be in aet- ive progress. There was a home-made still, worm and all, based on a copper boiler with lid soldered down tight and cleverly piped. At this place five big barrels of “booze” or "hooteh" were discovered. There would be about 200 gallons of home-made liquor in this batch, At another shack about 21/2 miles away, Pete Sicko was ur- rested. He is also accused of having a still and having liquor illegally. The police Seized the still on the premises. Like the other still it is apparently home-made and manufactured from a ~‘\\$\>X\\\‘ lyash boiler, though the :proceSS of dis- tillation varies somewhat from the other. At Sieko's shack there were about four gallons of booze already made, with three big barrels in the making. The'amount of liquor thus seized by the police may be totalled as between three and four hundred gal- Ions. On account of the location of the shacks it was impossible for the police to carry all the liquor ‘and machinery for making. Accordingly samples of the liquor were taken and all the machinery used, such as stillls, etc., were brought to town, along with the three prisoners. The police had a busy and strenuous night of it, two trips being made down the river for the work, the second trip being made by Offieers Allen, Rayeroft and Roy. Messrs. Colborne, Chartrand and Sicko are being held on a charge of illegally having lliquor in their pos- session.
