E Tapostry Gvored Davenpo PÂ¥ _ @40@000480404604 000 + : Buggestion of Two New Members for 1 T. & N. 0. Railway Commission Raises Storm of Protest. Announcement in the Toronto news papers last week to the effect that Col. MeLaren, of Hamilton, and Col. Martin, of Renfrew, were likely to be @ppointed to the vacant positions on the reâ€"organized T. & N. 0. Railway Commission has very rightly raised very strenuous protest from the peoâ€" ple of the North Land. The ground for protest is that the North Land g‘nts North Land men on the Comâ€" ission. The T. & N. 0. Railway is the only railway traversing the North Land and the T. & N. 0. does not go Beyond the bounds of the North Land. It is wholly and completely a North Land proposition. It was ostentatiousâ€" ly designed and advertised as a colonâ€" ieation factor. It was supposedly built to assist in the development of the great North. Whether the North Land likes it or not, it has to depend very materially for development and conâ€" venience upon the T. & N. O. Because ef these facts, the railway is a quesâ€" tion of prime importance to the North Land. Under the right auspices the && N. 0. could be the greatest single fictor in assuring the progress and «development of this country. Under less‘ desirable auspices, it would prove a handicap and a drawback, as has been the case on occasion in past years. The appointment of Mr. Geo. W, Lee as Chairman of the Commisâ€" sion struck the North Land people as an evidence (longâ€"delayed thoneh> it was) that the Government intended to #ive the Railway and tne peopae a «aur «deal and a fair show, but the suggesâ€" tion that two outsiders, without know ledge of the country or its needs, are to be appointed to the Commission appears as a complete reversal of the sensible and just policy that should be pursued. No one can understand the North Land and its needs without residence for some considerable time in the country. Whatever impressions may be gathered from a few visits here are liasle to be wrong impresâ€" stons. ‘Men who live in the North #0N00000000000000000000000000000000000200000000000000 0000000000000 000000009 0000000000000 0000 08 0 004 0 9 62 MOWMMW C400%080e08s8%8e ©8606%40+v NORTH LAND WANTS NOTA LAND MEX ON COMMISSI N No. 900 Rovnd Top 6‘ Exten ion Table, Golden Oak Finish, "egular $27.00, for ....:......... $18.00 Walnut Round Top 6‘ Extension T . #§855.00, For ............¢/..... Coâ€" balt Council also passed a resolution last week asking that a least one of the new Commmissioners be a North Land man. Haileybury was strong along the same line. Iroquois Falls ind Timmins were e«qually decided in cheir attitude that the North Land should be specially represented on the North Land‘s one railway commisâ€" As soon as the announcement was made of the proposed appointments, Mr. R. A. Mclunis, president of the Associated Boards of Trade, wired Promier Drury asking that the apâ€" pointments be deferred until the f the proposal of the President of the Associated Boards of Trade. An »xception seems to be Cochrane, this northern burg thinking apparently that any action by the Government would be beyond criticism, especially at the ticklish moment when the proâ€" posed ‘‘Onâ€"toâ€"theâ€"Bay‘‘ proposal was in the balance. It was a Cochrane newspaper that said some months ago that the T. & N. 0. Railway ranked imong the best conductéd roads on the continent. When people can talk like that, what‘s the use? whole question could be discussed at the meeting of the Associated Boards of Trade in Cobalt this month. Most f the Boards of Trade in the North Land signified their special approval 3100 Land knows its needs, they get the spirit of the country and the people. Without this viewpoint there can not be intelligent handling of the peculiar needs and problems of this country. Fhe North Land has suffered too much in the past from the administraâ€" tion of men whose knowledge of the land was confined to occasional priâ€" vate car visits or the fact that they had made money speculating in Porâ€" cupine or Cabalt stocks or lost it in gambling in Larder Lake properties. The North Land, as The Advance has been pointing out for a year or more, wants North Land men on the T. & N. 0. Railway Commission. As soon as the exchange situaâ€" tion improves Mr. Loring thinks that we may expect great sums of British money to ‘be invested in Canadian mining ventures. British capital has found very profitable investment in the past in South African, Australian and other mines, and suceess in these fields influences Old Country finanâ€" ciers to look with favour on investâ€" ments in North Land mining. Mr. Loring suggests that a ue\v.plun will be used hereafter in regard to British investments. â€" British engineer$ and others acting directly for the British capital will take over properties and BRITISH MONEY ANXIOUS ‘TO INVEST IN MINING. This week a delegation from Mattaâ€" gami waited on The Advance to obâ€" jeet. They said that Timmins really has the meanest man in the North Land. They say the boy did cut up the cord of wood and his father was going to allow him to keep the sawâ€" dust for a cireus. But a man from Timmins went down that evening and stole the sawdust, and so there isn‘t going to be any cireus. Apparently Timmins humorists will have to continue to use South End for their jokes. Mattagami makes reply with promptitude and aptitude. Even the jokes .coming from Mattagami have a big ‘‘kick‘‘ to them. Bedding (Mr. ‘F. C. Loring, the wellâ€"known mining man, who has recently returnâ€" ed from a visit to the Old Country, says that it is only the adverse exâ€" change situation that is keeping British interests from heavy participâ€" ation at present in the extension of Last week The Advance referred to C. X. L. Laprairie‘s opinion that he had discovered the meanest man in the North Land in Mattagami. He claimed he heard this man telling his son that if he would eut up a cord of wood he would let him (the boy) keep the sawdust to make a cireus. In the matter of mining, Gold is now King, and investments will naturally be specially attracted to gold mining ventures. With investments of ‘British capital undoubtedly coming, the gold camps and especially the greatest of all gold camps in Canadaâ€"the Porâ€" cupineâ€"promise to enjoy a special and particular progress and develop ment. The Poreupine has never had what other mining camps would call a ‘‘‘boom.‘‘ Its progress has been steady without spectacular rushes or booms.
