They all helped to pack the bags (and provide contents) and the smaller children told teacher what to say in the letter which was enâ€" closed with each bag. â€" *> south Porcupine, Jan to The Advance. Replies are coming in from grateful sailors who have received ditty bags packed in South Porcupine by old and young. The Kindergarten class have had a reply from Petty Officer A. H. Stackâ€" house, of HMS. "Stadacona" and among other things he told them he had a little boy of 9 who had been a kindergartner."â€"His letter was written directly to the wee tots and he said he was "thrilled with the ditty bag which had in it everything â€" I needed." His special message which is well worth reâ€" peating is:â€"‘"To know that from the Kindergarten up, the people of Canada are really behind and working for the Canadian Navy is going to make us do our job just that much better." Miss Levinson‘s Class (T7 to 9 yearâ€" olds) were very excited when she read them the letter sent by H. H. Crawford of the S.S. Aikateriniâ€"too long to be given here in full. He says, "I am a Navy gunner and I am always aboard merchant ships. My present ship is a Greek one and all the crew are Greeks except my friend and myself. Of course some of them can speak a little English and I have learned a little of the Greek language so T can talk to them and we are a friendly crowd. I expect that vour teacher has taught you all about the ‘German occupied countries so you will know that Greece at present is ruled by the Germans. All of my Greek shipmates have famâ€" ilies and relatives at home and as they have not had any letters from Greece since 1940 they worry a great deal and I feel sorry for them.â€"Anyway I hope this war will soon be ended so that they may go home again and find their loved ones safe and well." ‘This sailor goes on to describe to the children very graphically the part of England that he comes fromâ€"is looking forward to having a photograph of the class (which is being sent), and concludes:â€""I can‘t express my feelâ€" ings of gratitude for what you have done for me, so once again thank you all and God bless you." And the latest letter is to the Cathâ€" olic Women‘s League from F. Harâ€" greave, second engineer on the SS. "New Texas‘". He says, "I would like to express my warmest thanks for the very pleasant surprise I had when I opened the ditty bag which you ladies had graciously filled and forwarded to the Navy Téague for distribution. It is such acts as these, and the kindly thoughts beâ€" hind the packing of these comforts, which will play a large part in makingi this a cleaner and a better world for us all to live in. It was quite unexpected that our ship came to Halifax as we were bound for another part of the world altogether. Owing to the very heavy weather conditions and the damâ€" age caused we had to make for the nearest port which turned, out fortunâ€" ately for us to be Halifax. No doubt you will (or should) receive many letters of appreciation f‘rom recipients of these bags, for they bring us a reminder of home comforts, which otherwise we should miss if it were not for such + parents, Mr. e Mines Creorge Morgan, who Cartonick, of the Northern staff, spent the holiday in has who left last week for Torâ€" as doined for work in , Mr® nhas 1 nas 1 M pent 1is parent. returned eason aAl _ M.
