In most cases the Christmas table insists on some extra otherâ€" world glamor, even in war time. . . .or should we say especially in war time? We owe a Christmas festival to the children at home, who are having a hard enough time growing up normally in a world at war. . . .we owe a Christmas festival to the children at the many war fronts too, for they‘re fighting to keep the ideal of Christmas alive. But this is no year for formality and front, no time for giving ourselvbs airs. . . it‘s a year to be friendly and unpretentious. The slick sleek sophisticated table settings are as outâ€"Oofâ€"ourâ€" lives as aluminum and new rubber. This year, simple hearty ways are the best tasteâ€"yes, even the word "cozy" can be used again. For the world needs more of what it stands for. BRAVE BRIGHTNESSâ€"Baste a red crepe paper ruffle around your white table cloth. . . .either straight across or in swirling scallops, using the Sunday damask or else making a cloth of white tarleton. A narrower ruffle of red around white service plates would be gay to add. . . .then a centerpiece made of several fat white paper bells, the oldâ€"time foldâ€"up kind. DOWN THE LANEâ€"Have a tablecloth of glistening white (either tarleton, sateen, or damask). . . .then down the center length of the table two rows of greenery making a lane down the center. Have Santa and his sleigh prancing down the lane. GLITTERâ€"Fill a glass punch bowl full of bright Christmas tree balls ang use silver "rain" around, the edge of the bowl as a fine deep fringe. Set this on a "cloth" of silver paper if you can get it. Otherwise use white tarleton spangled with flat silver stars or a beauteous lace cloth. FRESH AND FRAGRANTâ€"Flat fine poinsettias arranged on a big silver tray. . . .or bouquets of bright red carnations in silver bowls or white urns at each end of a buffet table. . . .these would be glamorous centerpieces for the most dignified table. TOREST OF LIGHTâ€"Treeâ€"shaped candles in various sizes, "planted" on a mirror plaque and surrounded with evergreens is charming for a Christmas centerpiece. WHITE LAMBSâ€"On a field of greens, made with flat laurel or rhododendron or huckleberry leaves, arrange a group of fuzzy white lambs made of pipe cleaners. . . .surround the whole "field" with a white picket fence (cut from white cardboard). . . .and maybe dot the field with silver and white stars. "DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS?"â€"Try a gossamer lace cloth, shining white napkins, white china with a centerpiece of fresh white flowers. . . .or white paper bells. . . .or white tisâ€" sue paper snow balls. . . .or a bouquet of white stars." That should make your dream come true even if the weather man doesn‘t. MAUVE CHRISTMASâ€"The loveliest Christmas table we‘ve seen was set with amethyst glass plates, white lace place mats. . . then down the center of the table, three giant white candles with garlands of silvered leaves tied up to each candle with mauyve ribâ€" bon and mauve Christmas bells. For simple plique desig: arranged in comes in 2 } Hospitality at Christmas Time (By Molly Bevan) I love the dear old customs That bless our Christmas Day: The holly and the candles, The trees and ribbons gays The carols and the laughter, The gifts from friend to friend; And best of all the greeting cards That kindly people send. As sweet as bells far chiming The joyous words they bear, The little simple messages That greet you everywhere; The wishes that they offer For health, for wealth and cheer For peace and glad contentment To meet the coming yvear." Brigtht with crimson ribbons And painted holly spray, Their golden magic warms a heart That‘s half the world away; Wherever ship makes haven, By alien shore or tide, The little cards of Christmas go To bless some lone hearthside. 1 love this festive season, The roaring fires aglow, The song and feast and happiness The starlight and the snow; But best of all I love the cards That kindly people send To voice a Christmas blessing From friend to absent friend.
