In the past few months the number of sons born has been about equal to the number of girl babies. There is an old superstiâ€" tion that preponderance of male births is a sign that "there is a war coming", the idea being that this is nature‘s way of offsetting any loss of man power in the nations. Vincent Ethier, of Hearst, was chargâ€" ed in . police court on Tuesday with theft by violence. The case arose from the snatching of a purse from Mrs. L. Helporin, of the Ambastsador Hotel. She took the money home from the hotel and. as she was walking towards the house the purse was snatched from her hand. (Mrs. Helperin was unable to identify the robber as it was dark and her asisailant had been behind her. The purse contained about $200.00 in three canvas bags, one bag having nickels, another dimes,.and the third quarters and halfâ€"dollars and bills. The man who snatched her purse was about the same siize as the accused. [Police eviâ€" dence told of the search for the accusâ€" ed and his final location in Hearst. After being brought back to Timmins he made a statement. A man running a beanery in Mountjoy told on the stand about a man coming to him on the morning of the theft with two canâ€" vas bags containing silver ccoins and asking him to change them into bills, claiming that he had been in a gamblâ€" ing game. A taxi driver gave eviâ€" dence of driving Ethier to the beanery at the time in question and he was quite firm in his identification of the accused. Ethier, who conducted his cwn defence, denied everything, includâ€" ing being at the beanery or having a windbreaker such as he was said to wear. He had no answer when the police preduced a photograph of Ethier wearing the very kind of windbreaker that he saidâ€"he never wore. He accused the police of securing liquor for him on the way from Hearst. MHe also intimated that some of the police had been drinking on the trip. Anâ€" other complaint he made was that he had not had cpportunity to secure a Better Grade Coats in the Season‘s Newest Styles lawyer. Magistrate Atkinson smid that police officers should not supply liquor to prisoners in any way, and any acâ€" oused person was entitled to the serâ€" vices of a lawyer. Chief Gagnon gave evideiwce to the effect that the accused had been, told that he could have a lawver i#f he wished. The magistrate commented that if the accused had wished a lawyer he could have had one at. last week‘s court by simply askâ€" ing. Magistrate Atkinson pointed out that there was no evidence of robbery with wiolence and he reduced the charge to one of theft from a person and sentenced the accused to one year in jJail.
