The Catholic Women‘s League of St. Alphonsus‘ Parish Church held their monthly meeting in the library room on Monday evening. There was a good attendance. Funeral Yesterday of Mrs. Jack Keen of Schumacher ‘The late Mrs. Keen was born at Dalâ€" tonâ€"inâ€"Furness in the North of Engâ€" land, and was 42 years of age at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband and seven children (two sons and five daughters), two brothers and three sisters in England, and one sister, Mrs. Vickers, of Schumacher. ‘The late Mrs. Keen came to Schuâ€" macher sixteen years ago and was held in the highest esteem by her many friends. ‘(An ardent worker for the Schumacher Anglican Ladies‘® Guild she will be much missed in that circle. €ympathy is extended to the husband and family in their sad loss. Mrs. Keen was taken to hospital at sixâ€"thirty Sunday evening. A daughter was born at nine o‘clock and Mrs. Keon passed away early on Monday mornâ€" ing, never having regained conscicusâ€" ness. The resolution was worded that h> would be appointed and paid at a rate that the council approved or on that was acceptable to the chairman of the Finance Committee. A from Chief of Police Leo H. Gagnon asked that the council cancel the taxi driver‘s license that was issued to Joseph A. Houde. Houde was conâ€" victed in police court here on Septemâ€" ter 3rd on a charge of keeping beer for sale and the car that he was using was confiscated. The license was canselled in the same manner as in all those cases,. The Department of Highways wrote to the council asking them to share the costs in put‘ting a new fiocr in the Mattagami River bridge. The work is being done now and the estimated cost of $1,000 will be shared between the town and the Department of Highways. T. H. Wilkes, secretary of the Disâ€" trict of Cochrane Firemen‘s Associaticn wrote to the council asking that the fire and light committee chairman be semt to the jcint convention of the Cochran> and Temiskaming Firemen‘s Asscciations. The convention will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Sepâ€" tember 15th and 16th, at Val d‘Or, Queâ€" bec. The convention will be attendsd by Fire Chief A. Rerland, and by Counzcillor Eyre. Mr. Wilkes explained that there had been a misunderstandâ€" ing between the two associations in reâ€" gard to the sending of the invitations and that was the reason that the inâ€" vitation had reached here so late. Councillor Spooner suggested that at this time when a pile driver is at work a the nsw bridge at the Mattagami River some piles should be driven into the water at the site of the municipal beach on the river. This item was deferred when it was learned that town engineer‘s department could drive the piles in during the winter. The other municipal ‘beach on Gilâ€" Mes Lake will be enlarged and the council has been trying to get the adâ€" joininz property in order to lengthen the beach.
