COMING SUNDAY MIDNIGHT .. ; “FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT' -. fluâ€" .â€"b Exn n This is at the Palace Theaâ€" tre This Week. Fonda Falls and Falls All for the Love of "Eve" Aciors haveâ€"been slapâ€"happy from fight scenes, whirlâ€"dizzy from fast dancing, flutterâ€"stomached ffom nauâ€" tical~ scenss, airâ€"tipsy from aviation shots and bounceâ€"woozy from riding horses, but Henry Fonda was stumble and flopâ€"dazed after his appearance in the new comedy, "The Lady Eve." Fonda takes six different comety Charlie Chaplin, and a strong supâ€" porting cast, will be at the Cartier theatre for a full week from Sunday midnight, July 14th, to Saturday, July 19th, in the now famous picture, "The Great Dictator." This picture has been doubleâ€"banned in Germany, some say because it is thought to be a takeâ€" Ooff on Hitler, but others because it makes people fairly weep with laugnâ€" ter, and Hitler cannot stand laughter of any kind. In any event, Hitler or no Hitler, "The Great Dictator" is hailled as the greatest laughâ€"provoker in years. Even Walter Wincheil laughed so much over the show that he couldn‘t think of a mean criticism. Instead hes hands it "New Yorchids." Ina Wolfert, North American Newsâ€" paper Alliance critic terms it "the best picture" he has ever seen. Other notâ€" ed critics have the same words of praiss, while "the man in the street" just says "It‘s great!" Charlie CFaplin in "The Great Dictator," Coming Ellery Queen‘s Penthouse Mystery xs one of the two specials on the doub!t feature programme on Thursday to Saturday at the Cartier. The other feature picture is "Scattergood Pulls the Strings", with Guy Kibbee, Bobs Watson, Emma Dunn, Susan Peters, Dink Trout, James Corner, Monte Blue. Mystery storiecs are among the most popular on stage and screen and radio, and the Ellery Queen series are espeâ€" clal favourites. ‘This weekâ€"Thursday, Thursday midnight and Friday and Saturday one of the double features at the Cartier.is Ellery Queen‘s "Pentâ€" house Mystery." This is a story of Oriental mystery in Manhattan. "A slain ventriloquist tells no tales . . . til a dummy spills the story . . . when Ellery Queen pulls the strings." That is the way one reviewer sums up the plot. In any event there will be myâ€" s.ery, adventure, romance, enough for all in this latest of the Ellery Queen stories. Ralph Bellamy takes part of Ellery Queen; Nikki Porter as Ellery‘s queen of secretaries is taken by Marâ€" garet Lindsay. â€" Others in the cas: are Anna May Wong, Chzriey Grapeâ€" win, James Burks, Edwardo Ciammeli. Starring Charles Boyer and "Back Street" "Big Boss" _ LORAINE DAY AND HERBERT Guy Kibbee Again Stars in Popular Scattergood Film One of the Specials on Douâ€" ble Feature Programme. There are two specials on the double feature programme at the Cartier Theatre Thursday, Thursday midnight, Friday and Saturday, June 26th to 28th. Oone of these is Ellery Queen‘s Pentâ€" house Mystery and the other is Guy Kibbee in ‘"Scattergood Pulls the Strings." j Based on the experience of the inâ€" habitants of the dficitious town otf Coldriver and leavened with comedy highlights, "‘Scattergood Pulls the Strings," with Guy Kibbee featured in thHe title role, proves to be a moving drama. Twice, Miss Stanwyck trips him, just as.a forceful means of calling herself to his attention. Then he takes a noseâ€" dive into a platter of juicy hors d‘oeuâ€" res; another time he awkwardly catches his foot in a portiere and goes into a tailâ€"spin; then again, he has an enâ€" counter with a huge chunk of roast beef; lastly, the most spectacular spiit he takes is when he exits from a traim and lands in a puddle of mud the size of a lake. This is the second in the series adapted from the famous magazine stories by Clarence Budington RKelâ€" land, and the radio programme mate from them. The success of the first film paved the way for "Scattergood Pulls the Strings,‘" with many new players added to the nowâ€"famous charâ€" acterizations of Scattergood, Pliny, Hipp and Mirandy, played by Guy Kitbtbee, Dink Trout, Paul White and Emma Dunn respectively. Addtions include Bobs Watson, young dramatic star, Monte Blue, seasoned character actor, and Susan Peters and James Corner, who make their debut as feaâ€" tured players in the romantic roles in the pictures. falls that Writerâ€"Director Preston Sturges placed in the script of the Paramount pictures which is at the Palace theatre Friday, Friday midnight and Saturday, June 27th and 28th. The sextet of plain and fancy dives ruined a total of ten suits. Fortunâ€" ately for Fonda, the cost had to be borne by the studio, for it is a Hollyâ€" wood custom that, although actors proâ€" vide their own wardrobe when modern garb is required, nevertheless, the studio pays for whatever clothing is ruined. The clothes he wears in the picture are snappy, upâ€"toâ€"theâ€"minute models, unlike the rough overalls or period costumes he has been forced to wear in his roles during the past three years. What‘s more, in ‘"The Lady Eve," in which he is coâ€"starred with beautiful Barbara Stanwyck, he has a real haircut, a luxury he wasn‘t perâ€" mitted, either, for more than three years. "Strawberry Blonde" Starring James Cagney and Olivia Enacting the story written by Sturâ€" ges, Fonda spends a g@od deal of the time looking up at Miss Stanwyck from a variety of positions into which he falls. It isâ€"not a figure of speecn to say that Fonda falls for Miss Stanâ€" wyckâ€"in fact he does six times.
