Successful Carnival Held Saturday Night at South Porcupine Arena Its success was entirely due to the efforts of the Log Cabin Ski Club who worked very hard both before the carâ€" nival and during the evening. As a financial success it is outstanding, as, owing to the generosity of local merâ€" chants and the coâ€"operation of the workers, the free performances of the McIntyre Fancy Skating Club, and the Gold Belt Band expenses were small. Even the caretaker of the rink had done his part by putting patriotic emâ€" blems under the ice surface and hung the arena with flags. South Porcupine, March 16â€"(Special to The Advance»â€"Without doubt the carnival held here in the arena on | Friday night was thc largest and most | successful South Porcupine has seen.‘ It was also the first carnival to be held in the arena. 4 But the Ski Club wish us to mention that Mr. Grant Barron deserves a speâ€" cial note of thanks for the splendid work he did for the carnival. _ Miss Mary Yorke also assisted, other workâ€" ers being Wilmer Fera, Allan Jackson, and Reg. Clark all officers of the Log Cabin Ski Club. All proceeds will go to the Kiwanis War Servings drive. More than two thousand people, inâ€" cluding the spectators, filled the rink and Reeve V. H. Evans officially openâ€" ed the carnival. The fancy skating group from the McIntyre Skating Club were guest artâ€" ists and met with unstinted praise and applause as they put on their different "acts.‘‘ Many encores were demanded. The solo of Mildred Verbick, a little girl, was charming, also those of Marâ€" garet Keeley and Alec Fulton, were loudly applauded. Other skaters who tangoed, tenâ€"stepped and waltzed very nicely were Dave Rymer and Mrs. Smooks; Wm. Paul and Margaret Keeley: F. Murray and Ann Lukon; J. Cunningham and Kay ‘Burke; J. Dutton and Evelyn Leman, B. Chalâ€" mers, Kay Phillibin, T. 'Gilbert, Mrs. Clothier, M. Mulcahy, D. Sturgeon. Costumes of all descriptions were on the ice, all of them good, many very original, some very pretty, and judges‘ decisions concerning the prize winners met with popular approval. Miss Margaret Lloyd (Dome EXx.), and Bob Chalmers in a comic act proâ€" vided laughter in plenty. A broomball match (the annual) beâ€" tween South Porcupine Fire Departâ€" ment and Schumacher Fire Departâ€" ment was really good, the referee prQâ€" viding plenty of hilarity. The result was a victory for South End PFire fightersâ€"one goal to nothing the final score. â€" Carlo Cattarello provided the score goal. The best dressed prize winner on the ice was Vladimin Capyk (Hyrnyk) who as a British bomb victim was about too realistic. His plea to buy WaAar savings stamps (on his back) was reâ€" alized as an advertisement for the carnival proceeds. lows : â€" Mens‘ Open Raceâ€"Fancy knife i‘l‘l‘l""l 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000009_000000000000000000000000000000:00000000 4 MONDAY, MARCH 17TH. 1941 List bf-priz'ewinnr:rs and prizes and Ladies Comic Costume â€" Turkesy â€" donatel by Workers Coâ€"operative Stores â€"won by Vivian Miller (London Arâ€" riett) chain gonated by Bill Wattanâ€"won by Buck Thomas.
