Thirty years ago, this was just a partial clearing in ths virgin bush. Here is the record for Christmas, 1940;:â€" Population of Timminsâ€"28,630, the latest official assessment figures. 742 business places. 5100 dwellings. Total assessment, $14,796,387. Taxable assessment, $10,262,124. 46 miles of roads and streets, nearly three miles of them paved. 33.3 miles of sidewalk, of which 30 miles are concrete. 32.40 miles of sewers. 27.1 miles of waterworks mains. 4,500 separate waterworks customers. 600,642,438 gallons of water used, apart from the amount used by the Hollinger and McIntyre Mines. Average daily consumption of waterâ€"46.3 gallons per capita. Timmins prides itself, very rightly, on being a city of homes, as well as a business centre. From the beginning of the town these were always confortable homes here. Even the small homes hurâ€" riedly crected to provide immediate shelter were built so far as possible as real homes. And there has been constant effort for improvement. During the years that the Home Improvement Plan was in force in Canada, Timmins took third place for the amount of home improvement being exceeded only by the two metropolitan centres Toronto and, Montreal. Under the Home Improvement Plan Timmins spent nearly two million dollars for improved homes. This, of course, is apart from the individual outlays not under the Act. Timmins has a city bus service regularly serving all sections of the town. There is reguar bus service to Schumacher, South Porcupint, Dome, and to all the neighbouring mines. Industries: Mining, lumbering, market gardening, etc. Timmins is the home of the famous Hollinger Mine, employing over 3,000 men the year round. McIntyre, Dome, Moneta, Coniauâ€" rum, Pamour, Paymaster, Faymar, Hallnor, Aunor, Preston Past Dome, Buffalo Ankerite, Gillies Lake Porcupine, DeSantis, Brouâ€" lan, Naybob, Delnite, Concordia and other mines in the vicinity employ many hundreds of Timmins men. For the first ten months of the year, Porcupine‘s production is offâ€" cially given as $45,364,648. The lumber output of the industry centred in Timmins is nearly a million dollars a year. Farming and market gardening is extending each year. A feaâ€" ture here last year was the farmers market conducted by a group of farmers in premises secured and maintained by themselves. This year the town built a special building to house the market and the market is being carried on under municipal autspices to the advantage of farmers and townspeople alike. The Timmins Horticultural Society‘s annual show is recogâ€" nized as ons of the largest and best in the province.
