One of the features is "Laddie" and the other, "Laughing at Danger." "Laddie," one of Gene Stratton Porâ€" ter‘s most distinguished works, comes to the screen with all the appeal, all the vigorous drama, all the imaginative touches of the novel, all authentic to the last detail of costume and locale and character and story. With Tim Holt in the title role "Ladâ€" die" is the story of the romance beâ€" tween a farm boy and a beautiful girl, the daughter of a proud and aloof father who forbids the‘ relationship. How Laddie‘s younger sister worms her way into the adamant parent‘s heart, allays his bitterness over his disbraced son and brings the young couple‘s parâ€" ents together brings the absorbing film to a heartâ€"warming, entertaining conâ€" clusion. _A twoâ€"millionâ€"copy best seller, "Ladâ€" die" was directed by Jack Hively for RKO Radio with Virginia Gilmore, lovely newcomer, as the romantic heroâ€" ine: Joan Carroll, Ginger Rogers‘ impâ€" ish sister in "Primrose Path," as Ladâ€" die‘s younger sister; and Spring Byingâ€" ton as the farm boy‘s mother. "Laughing at Danger" is said to be Frankie Darro‘s most hilarious comâ€" edyâ€"mystery. The picture is one of Monogran‘s effective productions and the cast is a capable one. Segn in the romantic leads are Joy Hodges, who plays the role of a beauty operator, and George Houston, who portrays a detective. Ironically enough these two performers who first got their start in motion pictures as vocalâ€" ists, do not sing in "Laughing at Danâ€" ger," Other important leads include Mantan â€" Moreland, popular colored comedian, Vdea Ann Borg, Guy Usher and Lilian Elliott. "Laughing At Danger" holds plenty of thrmiils for any audience. When murâ€" der and mystery comes to Celeste‘s exâ€" clusive beauty shop and Joy Hodges gets involved, Frankie Darro and Manâ€" Palace Presenting One of Year‘s Best Films, "Hell Below" ton Moreland play Sherlock and Watâ€" ies son respectively. War and Romance in Enterâ€" taining Picture. Thundering thrills of naval battles and an intimate panorama of the sailâ€" ors of the submarine fleet form a huge background for romance in "Hell Beâ€" law," in which Robert Montgomery, Walter Huston, Madge Evans, Eugene Pallette, Robert Young and a large supporting cast are playing at the Palâ€" ace theatre, PFriday, Friday midnight and Saturday, November 15 and 16. Submarines battle airplanes, and a whole fort is blown up in a remarkâ€" able episode in which a harbor full of enemy destroyers is bottled up. Against this crescendo accompaniment is the simple love story of a lieutenant who falls in love with the daughter of his commandeéer. For instance a second or so after you had almost bumped noses with it. All of which happened to Joe¢ Lamothe of the Kirkâ€" landâ€"Swastika Bakery the other day when delivering bread at Kenogamiâ€" and the bear was right in his own bread van at that! Joe had to deliver bread at the Kenâ€" ogaimi Hotel. There was nothing new about that. He had done so forâ€"countâ€" less days without undue incident. Getâ€" ting out of his car he left the side door open and went to the hotel with some bread. He returned for more and this time went to the back door of the machine. On opening the door he popped his head inside to get the necessary loaves of bread. He almost bumped his in105C against a yearling bear sitting calmly in the truck stuffing himself with a tasty loaf or so. To say that Joe was surprised hardly expresses his feelings, especially when the bear sort of lifted his /upper lip in a nice little snarl as much as to say, ‘"Who the blazes are you and what do you mean by disturbing a fellow at his breakfast." Joe thought, so he said: "What‘s this country coming to when a fellow finds bears in his bread van?" At first he thought it was a wild bear but he speedily discovered it was the hotel‘s pet that had escaped from its reâ€" straining chain. So Joe yelled for help and the bear was hauled out of the van and finished his bread on the roadway. ‘(But from now on Joe‘s takâ€" ing no chances. He‘s going to keep both doors of his truck closed when ne visits places where pet bears are kept. Free Hollanders Raising Large Fund for Spitfires London.â€"Among the heroes of reâ€" cent German bombing raids on Britain is the captain of a small coastal steamer of The Netherlands merchant fleet, whose leg was almost torn off when he led his crew in fighting off four Nazi bombers. The captain will be decorated with Holland‘s highest award by Queen Wilhelmina in person. The bravery of this Netherlands seaâ€" man is typical of the resistance which the Hollanders still are opposing to their Nazi invaders,. Even in Holland itself, the German authorities have not vet found a means to compel custonermMi in restaurants to remain when G°rman officers take seats on the premises. When this happens, the regular diners walk out as a silent and dignified proâ€" test. In London, Queen Wilhelmina and her ministers are busy with plans for the revictualling and economic reâ€" construction of Holland, because they believe firmly in the eventual defeat of Hitler and his armies. Incidentally, the pgeople of the Netherlands East Indies have pledged themselves to raise a "Queen Wilhelâ€" mina Fund" of five million guilders to be spent principally for military purâ€" poses. In their name Queen Wilhelâ€" mina has offered 40 Spitfires and 18 bombers of the Lockheedâ€"Hudson to King George.
