They received the first payâ€" ment for this recordâ€"breaking brainâ€" child a few months ago when Max story was that Joe Sachs, famous impressario of the day, had gone to New York seeking new material, An agent handed him script of "The Lilac Domino" which had been lying around the office for years. The authors‘ names did not appear on the script, and there was no means of identifying them. Still alive at tlhie beginning of 1918 they decided to spend their leave in London. _ Seeking entertainment, they were advised to visit one of the most successful shows in town, "The Lilac Domino," enjoying, they were told, a phenomenal run at the Empire Theaâ€" tre and playing to sensational business. They went, saw and were flabbergastâ€" ed. It was their own forgotten operâ€" etta‘l But no one was interested. Then war broke out. The young men joined up and forgot all about throaty heroes and appealing ingenues. They found a far bigger interest in their own fates than in that of their unperformâ€" ed masterpiece. Some 26 years ago two young French composers put the finishing touches to an operetta, placed it in the hands of an agent and sat back anxiously awaitâ€" ng news of its production.
