"One of the worst accidents in the history of the Porcupineâ€"Timmins highway," said The Advance ten years ago, "took place on Tuesday afternoon about four o‘cleck when a speeding car crashed into the road roller. There were six people in the car at the time of the collision, only one of them, a boy of about 12 years of age, escaping serious injury. One of the occupants of the car died in the hospital about 8 o‘clock that evening from injuries reâ€" ceived. Another was badly wounded about the head and face, it being necâ€" cessary to take out of of his eyes, on atâ€" count of the nature of his injuries. A third man suffered serious wounds about the head and face. The fourth man sustained miror injuries. The @river of the, car had his arm broken ibetween the elbow and the wrist, had bad gashes on his leg and also suffered a bad cut on the forehead. He left the scene of the accident, but was found by the police about ten o‘clotck on Wedâ€" nesday morning in the bush nearby, and removed to the hospital where he is suffering from insect bites received in the bush as well as from exposure shock and serious injuriecs sustained in the accident. The accident occurred at what is called the second hill west of South Porcupine. The township steam rolled which is being used for the repair work to the roads, was parked on the old road that was used in the early days before the hill was cut down and a more direct road made. The roller was accordingly some distance from the preâ€" sent roadway and on a lower level." At the Temiskaming Firemen‘s tournament held at Cochrane on Monâ€" fday, July lst, ten years azo, the Mcâ€" Intyre team made a notable showing in the track events. After an allâ€"day rain the track was in bad shape, but the runners wer» not even discouraged and some good times were made. Paulâ€" en, the Dutch Olympic runner, who was then with the McIntyre, where he gave very valuable soervices as coach. mage great run in the quarter mile, and fairly ran away in the 100â€"yds, W. Paice and W. Shiclds, of Timmins, two high school runners, won seven of the cups. Shields won the hop, step and jump; second in the high jump and one lap of the relay race. Nort Abramson, a new member of the McIntyre team, from Iroquois Falls, could not find his stride in the individual races, but more than made up for this in the relay. W. Paice took first in the 400 yds. second to Paulen in the hundred yards dash; second in the broad jump, and ran a lap in the relay. The body of Prospere Bourassa, of Ansonville, was found ten years ago in Meadow Creek near Iroquois Falls. Two young lads found the body floating on the water. Bourassa had been missing since June 2nd. It was thought that the unfortunate man fell into the watâ€" ANNUAL SUMMER FROLIC Tickets ablainable from Moisley Bal, Third Ave., Stan Fowler, Bldg., or any member of The Lions Club, TNE OF QUALITY Friday, July 14th, 1939 Gutla Percha Tires are sold and recommended by: MATTAGAMI SERVICE STATION, Mountjoy Street MONETA SERVICE STATIONâ€"15%2 Pine Street Ssouth SUBWAY SERVICE STATIONâ€"Schumacher Highway FRED LAFORESTâ€"127 Golden Avenue, South Porcupine ADMISSION $1.50 PER COUPLE RIVERSIDE PAVILION 930 P.M. TO ? In The Advance ten years ago (in part) : ‘"Dominion Day, 1929, will always be remsmbered by sportsmen of Timâ€" mins. Under the management of "Lap" Lapratrie, fight fans of the camp were treated to a fine feast of boxing talent. With four good bouts, all present at the skating rink here on Monday evenâ€" ing had their money‘s worth. There was a good attendance present, but not as large as the event warranted. Timâ€" mins Citizens‘ Band added to the pleasâ€" ure of the night by the good music proâ€" vided. In the inavoidable absence of the bandmaster, A. Wilford, the band was in the capable charge of bandsman Carl Johns. First on the evening‘s bill was a battle royal between two paperâ€" weights, Leonard Wadsworth and Harâ€" old Johnson. Leonard got the decision in this bout, but very much credit is due to Harold for his sterling display of pluck and skill and sportsmanship against a heavier and taller opponent with longer reach. At the Kiwanis Luncheon ten years ago at the Empire hotel the speaker for the day was E. L. Longsmore, for several years mill superintendent at the Hollinger, who spoke on "milling." Mr. Longmore‘s address was a most interâ€" esting one and the members of the club found it a veritable mine of information while they also considered they had regular nusgets of golden facts simply for the picking in the question box that he opened for their benefit. After his talÂ¥K on milling, Mr. Longmore volâ€" unteered to answer any questions that he could, and this part of the program was unusually interesting, many asking questions that Mr. Longmore answered in illuminating way. In his address Mr| Longmore gave a very comprehenâ€" sive review of the recovery of gold from the ore, the process of refining, and the general treatment of the gold rock from the time it was brought to surface unâ€" till it was shipped away as bullicn. Mr. Longmore pointed out that as early as 1762 it was known that cyanide would dissolve gold, but no practical use seemed to have been made of the knowâ€" lrdge until about 1877. Forrest and McArthur were the two men who first developed the cyanide process for the extraction of gold from the rock. The procsess was first used in New Zealand Some idea of the growth of the use of cyanide process was given by contrastâ€" ing the amount of cyanide used forty years ago with that used now. In 1889 the> world‘s consumption of cynide was 50 tons for the year. In 1905, ten thousand tons were used. Today Northern Ontario used over 800 tons of cyanide a year. er while fishing from the bridge, There were no marks on the body. Bourassa was about 36 years of age and came from Dupit, Quebec. He was a widower but had two children in an orphanage in Quebec.
