He: said in reference to the singing of "O, Canada‘" that a line of the anthem had a more forceful meaning toâ€"day than ever before as far as the Legion was concerned. He referred to the words "We Stand on Guard for Thee," and said that the National Survey just completed showed that 25, 000 exâ€"serâ€" vicemen in Ontario had been classified and were ready to "Stand on Guard for Canada." Speaking of Legion progres? the provincial president said there were 264 branches of the Legion in Ontario and in the first four months of 1939 there had been an increase of 1,700 members over last year‘‘s figures A vote of thanks was passed by the memâ€" bers to Col. Much corresâ€" pondence was read and some ordered posted. Comrade A. C. Much discussion took place re the Provinciai Convention to be held this vyear in Brantford, August 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Some felt that not much good resulted from these affairs; others voicâ€" the opinion that much of importance for exâ€"servicemen‘s welfare was the reâ€" sult of conventions. The meeting deâ€" cided to send three delegates to Brantâ€" ford, these being Walter Greaves, presâ€" ident, Al. Wetmore and W. A. Devine, executive officers. There were four nominations for the post, A. Bellamy being defeated. A combined picnic with the Ladies" Auxiliary will be held this summer and plans are under way to this end. Question at Cobalt on the Power of Committee Chairman Lively Discussion at Cobalt Council Over Town Foreâ€" man. Cobalt, June 29â€"(Special to The Adâ€" vance)â€"Whether a committee chairâ€" man has the right to fire a man workâ€" ing for the municipality, or whether this was a matter to be left in the hands of the town foreman, was the question tossed at Cobalt town council on Monday evening. The problem was not solved during the session, but it was understood the town clerk would search the records to ascertain if there is any byâ€"law covering the point, which arose when Ernie Proulx challenged the authority assumed by Councillor A. P. Landry, chairman of the board of works, who had discharged Proulx work done, and he asked that the from working on the water tank beâ€" cause the "work there was unsatisf tory to me." Councilior Burt Sopha, a former town foreman declared "I never had the chairman ‘tell me what to do," to which Councillor Landry retorted that "in the past, the board of works has been a bit soggy at times." He added that "if I did step over my head, I don‘t care. If I hire a man to work eight hours a day he works eight hours or he‘s out." Proulx claimed the chairman should only "establish the quality and not the auantity of the councillor be replaced, but Councillor Landry only said "the point is, if I take an obligation to see a piece of work done, I see to it, so swallow that, Mr. Proulx." Proulx further alleged it was expectâ€" ed men working at the tank would climb 40 feet up a ladder "discarded by the fire har 20 years ago and tied with hay wire," that Councillor Landry insisted Proulx did not know what he was talkâ€" ing about. Further argument over the tank job arose when John McGarry said he had been offered $65 for the job of making repairs and painting and subsequently another man whom he named as David had received $150 and the town supplied the paint. Councillor Landry said McGarry had been offered work at a day‘s pay Oof $3.50, but McGarry said he had turned this down, as his experienceâ€"he said he was "the only quallhed man in town for the job‘ ‘â€"enfitled him to more money.
