Summer Best Time to Check the Heating The summer being a slack season in the heating industry is the most opâ€" portune time for overhauling,, replacâ€" ing or modernizing home heating plants, says the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating in a bulletin discussing the care of household boiler and warmâ€"air units, While some heatâ€" ing plants may need only a thorough cleaning and checking of automatic controls, others may need major alterâ€" ations and the addition of new equipâ€" ment or accessories which will provide greater fuel economy and better disâ€" tribution of heat in its next working season, Repairs and alterations can best be made in the summer without inconvenience to household routine, Good Idea to Inspect System and Make Needed Imâ€" provements. It is very important that all sootâ€" lined surfaces be cleaned.. Soot not only acts as an insulator to diminish heating efficiency but has also corâ€" rosive tendencies, especially if it beâ€" comes damp, as it is liable to do in humid weather. The annual cleaning of the plant should therefore include a thorough cleaning of the firebox and fAues; cleaning. and removal of the smoke pipe; greasing of the edges of all doors and checking and oiling of all draft controls. The grates should be carefully inspected and any which are broken or warped. permitting unburnâ€" ed coal to drop into the ashes, should be replaced. In the case of an automatically firâ€" ed plant, the controls should be careâ€" fully checked. Pumps, motors, and all moving parts should be examined, cleaned, reâ€"packed and oiled. An inâ€" spection of the pipes and, in the case of hot water systems, the radiators and valves is desirable in order to deterâ€" and 40 Main st., south Porcupine, Phone 285 REAL ESTATE INSURANCE sSTEAMSHIP OFFICE 20 Pine Sst. Additional insulation of boiler and pipes may be found to be advantageâ€" ous. Many an old hot water boiler may be given added efficiency by the installation of a pump to force the cirâ€" culation of the water through the sysâ€" At the same time, says the Institute if a boiler or furnace is well on in years it is usually wiser to retire it than to spend a good deal of money in patchâ€" ing it or in adding gadgets. Nobody thinks of keeping a car beyond a reaâ€" sonably useful life of service and while, in comparison with a car, a heating plant ‘will last a lifetime, there does come a day when it, too, should givc way to a new model. Whether the preference of the individual :; for h3 water or warm air systems, both types have been vastly improved in the past few years not only in the handsome lacquered jackets and eautomatic operâ€" ation which have given such stimulus to utilizing the basement for living space but, what is more important, in the interior design which . produces more heat for less fuel. June 28â€"Evidence that Canada was visitecd by Norscmen 1,000 years aro was presented to members of the Ontario Historical Society at their finalâ€"session of the annual meeting hers Friday. Prof. T. F. Mcliwraith, of the University of Tororto and the Royal iOntarlo Museum told of finds made in Lake Nipigon district in recent years which were undisputably Scandinavian in origin. Meeting at the University of Western Ontario the historians heard Dr. P. Nash, of the Rcyal Ontario Museum, and Wilfrid Jury curator of Western‘s Indian collection, speak of various phasâ€" es of early Indian lif> in this district. Planked Floors in Huts Dr. Nach illustrated his lecture with lantern slides of the excavations in the Aylmer District which would seem to indicate the Irecquois Indians used planksed floors in their dwellings. This fact had not been previously discovered, but the speaker said he was convinced from the charcoajized remains found there that roughâ€"hewn boards about two inch2s thick and 11 inches wide had been laid down by the early tribes. Tracing the centuriesâ€"old Indian trials of Western Ontario, Mr. Jury said these narrow paths, most of which latâ€" er became county roads and high‘ways. The most famous of these trails, the Longwood Road had survived as King‘s Hishway No. 2. Mr. Jury said and countless other paths were still in eviâ€" dence. Talbot in the Western Ontario district, was dedicated in St. Paul‘s Caâ€" th2dral as the closing act of the twoâ€" day convention. The window, it was explained, iwas originally erected in Burwell memcrial Church, Caradoc. The edifice had abandoned and memâ€" ters of the London and Middlesex Hisâ€" torical Soziety had it removed to St. Paul‘s, a church already rich in historâ€" ical association. Use Neutron Beams It has been found that when uranium is bombarded by an electrical beam made of neutrons, some of the uranium atoms split in two. The neutron beams are made in various ways in laboratorâ€" ies, either with the aid of radium or with highâ€"voltage electrical machines. When the uranium atoms split, the parts fiy off from the metal in the form of two high voltage particles. If enough of these particles can be proâ€" duced, they will form an electrical beam which can be used to operate machines. A very lowâ€"voltage neutron will split a uranium atom and the two halves of uranium come flying off with very high voltages. Thus a little incoming power theoretically could turn into a huge outgoing electrical beam. The difficulty is to get the neutrons in the incoming neutron beam to â€" make enough hits. Like Firecrackers That has been an insurmountable trouble in all previous attempts to unâ€" lock atomic power. But the uranium may offer a way to dodge this trouble. For it has shown indications of having its atoms act like a bunch of firecrackâ€" ers, Set off one cracker and the others follow by what is known as a chain reaction. Uranium atoms will do the firecrackâ€" er trick under certain restrictions. if scientists can find practicable means to set up uranium chain reactions, then it is estimated that it may be possible to obtain from one pound of uranium as much energy as is at presâ€" ent obtained from 1,250 tons of coal. Cole Bros. Circus, showing at Timmins on Monday, July 3rd, Pine street and Second avenue grounds, features beautyâ€"beauty in girls, horses, dogs, other animals. There are a hundred beautiful girls in Cole Bros. Circus, with sixty clowns as a proper foil. Clowns also are feaâ€" tured in this cireus, and this is one reason for the special popularity of Cole Bros. big show. Another extra special reason for this particular popularity is the big free street parade held at 11 a.m. on every day the cireus presents its show. Still another favourite feature with the boys and girls (of all ages) is Art Mix, Western movie star, and his conâ€" gress of rough riders.
