The name "Selfâ€"Denial® was given years ago to the appeal beâ€" cause of the suggestion of one of the captains that he was ready to go withâ€" out tasting pudding for a year, the monrey that would otherwise be spent for this appealing food to be devoted to the work of the Army. General Booth,. then in command of the Army. did not adopt the idea of "going withâ€" out pudding" but he did seize on the thought of some selfâ€"denial on the part Of the Army officers and soldiers so that the needful would be ready to finance the work. The Army does not press the idea of selfâ€"denial on the general public, but does ask that those who can spare something, do so at this time to help the Army‘s social welâ€" fare work. It surely is a worthy cause and thosr who give to the Army are helping those in need and in trouble. Some idea of the extent of the work Of the Salvation Army may be gatherâ€" d from the following data of Army activity in Canada alone ‘‘(and the Army does its notable work in 94 other jountries):â€"Homes for women . and rirls, 22; accommodation, 1737; chilâ€" The many friends of Fire Chiecf Alex Borland will be pleased to learn that hbe is up and around again after his recent illness.
