To Borrow $641,000 Under the provisions of a by-law that was passed. council is authorized to borrow up to $641,000 to meet cur- rent expenses until taxes are collected. The loans will be arranged with the Imperial Bank. Insurance Complaint George S. Drew addressed the council and complained that he was not satisfied with the percentage of insurance business received from the town by his firm, Simms, Hooker and Drew. While in 1935 his organization had received twenty per cent. of the total. this figure had dwindled to three per cent. last year. “Our office is the highest assessed insurance establish- ment in town." said Mr. Drew. “The three members of the firm pay as much taxes personally as all the rest of the agents put together but our share of the town's insurance business is certainly not in proportion." he de- clared. Mr. Drew offered to handle and prepare schedules for the town’s insurance without being given any ex- tra. share of the business. At a special meeting held last Fri- day. it was decided that all policies in force for the town of Timmins be included in classified schedules to be prepared by Sullivan and Newton, who were to receive fifteen per cent. of the total commission. The balance of the commission was to be divided between the following agentszâ€"Percy Youlten. A. Des Roches, Percy J. Doyle. Dickson and Cameron, Bernier and Bonhomme, F. N. Whaley, Wilson A. Lang, Maturice Belanger, Simms. Hooker and Drew. It was brought out that in some cases only one agent is actively con- nected in businesses where a firm is indicated. with the result that one agent would receive the same commis- sion as a firm where more than one representative is associated. Finally it was decided to rescind the motion that had been passed and approved and a full inquiry will be made into the town’s insurance affairs before making a new agreement. Permit for Carnival Timmins Lions Club were given permission to bring Simms Greater Shows here for the week of July 20 to 26. The motion passed without any discussion Tag Days Authorized The commii‘tcc in aid of silicosis vic- tims wcrc.givcn permission to hold a tag day on June 3 and a similar rc- qucst from the Salvation Army for June 10 was also granted. The local branch of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind asked permission {or a tag day on June 11. but in view of the permits already is- sued, the clerk was instructed to write the organization and suggest a date in Jul]. Swimming Pool Councillor Bill Roberts suggested that, with the building of a retaining wall, a swimming pool could be estab- lished at reasonable cost at a. location adjacent to Gillies Lake. The same idea is to be proceeded with in Schu- macher he informed the meeting. Water from the pool here, he suggest- ed, could be changed every night and drained into Gillies Lake. Councillor Wren intimated that he was interested in a project that would‘ include a swimming pool, properly housed and available for use the year around and would welcome the assis- tance of council. No action was taken Sidewalk Is Wanted A petition bearing eleven signatures was received asking for'a sidewalk on Balsam street between Eighth and Ninth avenues.. It was referred to the public works committee. Council ls Invited The council unanimously accepted an invitation of Adjutant Cornthwaite. of the local Salvation Army corps. to attend a reception to Commissioner and Mrs. Carpenter. who will visit here on Saturday and Sunday. May 7 and Councillor Eyre was of the opinion that the Department of Health reguâ€" lations demand that water in all swimming pools be filtered and iv: thought that such an installation would be too costly. 8. Councillor Wren will act as chair- man for the occasion. Market Caretaker T. Latham applied for the position or caretaker at the Timmins market and the matter was referred to the public relations committee. Court Stenographer Mrs. R. W. Copps was oiliciaiiy ap- pointed court stenographer for the town at a salary of $60 per month. tance of council. No action in the matter.
