Founded in Timmins at the close of the war, the 1.ODE. carried on the work for the soldiers that had been the task of various patriotic soâ€" cieties during the time of the conflict. Soidiers and their families were helped, comforted and encouraged, and coâ€" operation extended to the several soldâ€" iers‘ organizations. Timmins Golden Chapter in all its worthy activities has but patterned itâ€" self after the Order of which it is a part. The first accomplishment of the 1.0.D.E. after its founding by Mrs. Murâ€" ray was the provision of a fund to E $ 8 § ; place fitting monument to the Canaâ€" dian soldiers who had offered their lives to their Empire at the time of the South African war. The monumentâ€" aan honour to the 1.O.D.E. as well as to the soldiersâ€"stands at Bloemfontein. During the Great War the I.O.D.E. colâ€" lected the remarkable total of six milâ€" lion dollars, established and maintained a hospital base with nurses and other attendants, ambulances, field kitchens, etc., as well as providing an immense quantity of comforts and aids for the soldiers in the field. After the war another half million dollars was raisâ€" ed for memorial purposes and scholarâ€" ships in Canada and overseas establishâ€" ed for the children of soldiers. Other matters in which the I.O.D.E. has parâ€" ticularly interested itself include:â€"care of the underprivileged, assistance to schools, secondary education, school libraries, scholarships and prizes, Emâ€" pire Day and other patroitic ceremonâ€" ials, hospitals and health, Empire study, British motion picture fillms, friendliâ€" ness to New Canadians, the Girl Guides, any practically every other patriotic or community movement for the genâ€" eral welfare. ‘In the coronation issue a full page was devoted to listing the patronesses, officers, executive, etc., of the I.0.D.E. The list showed how broad is the foundâ€" ation on which the I.O.D.E. is establishâ€" ed and maintained. Her Excellency, the Lady Tweedmuir is the honorary president of the National Chapter of Canada,. Mrs. Hubert Bruce is the honorary viceâ€"president for Ontario; Madame E. L. Patenaude, for Quebec. The <honorary viceâ€"presidents for the Chapter include:â€"Lady Gooderham, Miss Joan Arnoldi, Mrs. Angus Macâ€" Murchy, Matron Margaret Macdonald, Mrs. Colin H.:Campbell, Mrs, W. H. Barker, and many others. â€" The list of those on the National executive comâ€" mittee, the national councillors, the honorary members, the advisory board, is equally distinguished and impressive. Children‘s Aid to _ ~Hire Social Worker (Continued from Page One) Library Board A communrication was received from the Library Board asking for their annual grant in the amount of $7500. The board also requests an additional $1800 for new fixtures, furniture and expenses of moving into the new town hall. The matter was referred to the firance committee. sue to record the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was a journal of the most intense interest to all who respect the Empire and its traditions. The story of the King and @ueen and their family and of the corâ€" onation itself was ably accomplished in ‘"Echoes‘"‘, while the many illustrations, many of them richly coloured, were works of art. Progress Estimates . _The treasurer was ordered to pay the following amounts as progress estiâ€" mates on work at the new town hall:â€" Hillâ€"Clarkâ€"Francis, general contracâ€" tors, $10,000; Smith and Elston, plumbâ€" ing, $800; Armstrong Electric, $100; P. J. O‘Gorman, architect, $350. "Echoes," the magazine issued monthly ‘by the National Chapter of Canada Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire is worthy of a paragraph by itself. This attractive and cleverlyâ€" cdited magazine is of unusual value to Canada and the Empire. In addition to recording the story of the IL.O.D.E., it is an inspiration to Canadian patriâ€" otism and Canadian culture. The isâ€" . _ Actept Tenders The following tenders in connection with the new town hall were approved by council:â€"Hillâ€"Clarkâ€"Francis, linolâ€" eum, $2900; Viking Electric, sanding floors, $75.00; Offite Spécialty Comâ€" pany, partitions, $1632, counters, $1475. In givâ€" ing the cost of the fantasy, "Three Pills in a Bottle," one name was inadverâ€" tently omitted. The name was in the list supplied by the High School, but due to a dropped line, or other similar accident, it did not appear in print. The name was that of Moe Shragge, who showed last year that he has a special talent for dramatic work and is especially effective in ‘numorous parts. His name should have followed that of Tavy. Pierini, who took the part of "A Scissors Grinder." Moe Shragge was "His Soul." There were also two travelling prizes given, the winners being:â€"Ladies, Mrs. Byrom; gentlemen, Mr. Rickard. Death of Little Girl Born in Timmins Four Years Ago Refreshments were served during the evening by members of the club. Sakos Delights Large Gathering (Oontinued from Page One) The deep sorrow and pathos which the singer carried in every note, was easily understood by the audience, who strainâ€" ed forward in their interest. Ancother song that won special faâ€" vour was: ‘They Are Marrying My Love" the story of a young man whose love is being married to his rival, and who has been asked to be best man at the wedding; his prayers to God that he may be spared this trial made the lisâ€" teners keenly aware of his heartbreak. Very popular also was "Come Along and Dance," a merry melody, with a liiting rhythm. â€" Undoubtedly every selection was so roundly applaiuded that if the artist had given encores in every case, the gathering would still be hapâ€" pily applauding. The pianoforte solos presented by Miss Willlams were indeed a delight both to behold and to hear. Watching the artist‘s hands over the keys, it seemed that she barely touched the plano, and yet the smooth music that she brought forth from those keys proved otherwise. The selection "Gorâ€" dens in the Rain" was marvellous; each person in the audience seemed to see rain on trees and flowers and grass, and heard the drip, drip, of the raindrops. One could sense the time when the rain was very heavy, and then, again, the time when it was a light drip. At the conclusion of this number there was an insistent applause that brought the artist back for an encore selection. Der_ Wanderer .. Mn es ..Schubert Du bist die rith‘ ................_........
