(By J. V. McAres, in Globe and Mail ) One of the things that have puzzled us when we have had time enough to space from our own particular puzzles to take a cosmie view is how the exiled Kings and Queens are supported. Most of them seem to have their former thrones between dark and dawn, reachâ€" ing the border just in time to escape death, or, in the case of the more comeâ€" ly females, a fate worse than death. They have been generally execratd by their subjects They have had no time for . prolonged financial negotiations. They have no trades. Yet they are neither in the movies nor in the breadâ€" lines. In a word, they must have got ‘theirs and got plenty. Thuey seem to have about as much money as ever, and in addition to have escaped the duty of ‘maintaining draughty palaces likely to harbour assassins. For all we know, it may be a matter of some delicacy. Bath Promenade In a recent address to the Saturday Literary Club Jim made his report on the Ehiopians, whom he found at Bath. In his rather elegant introduction he was quoted as saying: "In the Temaâ€" gami country in Northern Ontario the sight of a dozen men, women and childâ€" ren trailing Indianâ€"file on a portage would be worth only a single glance, but if you spied a dozen dusky folks, clad in strange raimont. on the classic streets of Bath, England, where Bea Nash, sovereign lord of manners and fashion near 200 years back, swaggeredâ€"well, you‘d stop, look and listen, especially if the parade were led by an exâ€"King and a descendant of Solomon, wisest of ‘em all, except perhaps, in the matter of wives." You seem to have someâ€" thing there, Jim, and we should have liked to hear you develop the theme. However, he was thinking not of Soloâ€" man but of Selassie, and says that on certain days, the exâ€"Emperor goes shopping, and after him trail the exâ€" Empress and then, in order of their rank and ibirth, his sons and daughter. Bath, Police and Composed. Also included in the procession are some former chiefs, known as rases because according to Mr. Barry, of the frequency with which some of them were given the rasberry. But this did not happen in Bath. The people thers VYACUUM CLEANER $ 49.95 Fruits V egetables PROMPT CAREFUL DELIVER Y Phones 2100â€"2101 Loin Chops or Roast, lb. The children play about on the lawns and ride tricycles like English youngsters. To Mr. Barry‘s sympathetic imagination the sight of fairfield recalled St. Helena though there is the obvious difference that there is no harsh Governor for Haile Selassie. But it seems to us that his chances of being returned in glory to Addis Ababa are about as remote as those of Napoleon to return to France E. H. King, Timmins postmaster i making a last appeal to citizens to d their Christmas malling early. Belo are shown the last dates on which mai can be posted to reach its destinatio: on time but it is also pointed out tha persons will be well advised to mai at least a day in advance of the fina dates as follows: December 2â€"Greece, Italy., Rouman ia, Palestine, South America and Wes are too polite or too used to celebrities to become excited at the parade. In fact Mr. Barry thinks that maybe Seâ€" lassie chose Bath because it is noted for its selfâ€"restraint in the presence of magnificoes. The old Duke of Conâ€" naught is a frequent visitor, because, as he says, there is no damn nonsense about royalty in Bath. While Mr. Barry was regarding the exâ€"Emperor one day last September a lad asked him for his autograph. The request was graciously received, and in few minutes the lad had sold the signature for a shilling. Mr. Barry is too polite to suggest that there may be a racket in which Selassie is a sleeping partner, although there are others more suspicious. Hs found the exâ€"King democratic and approachâ€" able, with a refined kindly face,. He speaks no English but can converse fluently in French, particularly about Mussolini. He is of average height, is about 48 years old, although because he has half a dozen grandchildren, he is generally supposed to be older. The Ethiopians marry at 16. Sympathy for exâ€"Empress ‘The people of Bath like the exiled family and pay tritkute to their general courtesy,â€" even though some of their manners may seems a bit ®dd. ‘"The little exâ€"Empress," said Mr. Barry. little exâ€"Empress," said Mr. Barry. "most gentle of manner, remains overâ€" whelmed with a sadness that befits her exile, I hear the poor lady fails to beâ€" come reconciled to English ways and frets for the mountain slope that was her home. Probably, at times, because of this, she has no voice, but tears. (Courage, little Empress; the long day may shortly close.)" The remarks in parentheses are those of Mr. Barry, who is, we fear a shade more sentimenâ€" tal than we. He says that English cooking is probably a nightmore to the Ethiopions, for recently a Bath newsâ€" paper advertised for a cook who underâ€" stands how to cook fish in oil,. The inference is that the cook was.desired by the Ethiopians, but it seems to us that if this were so it would have been Italians, not fish, that were specified. Reminded of St. Helena. Most of ‘the Empzror‘s children and grandchildren are attending expensive private schools in Bath, and one of them accosted ‘by Mr. Barry admitted that he spoke English a little and then proved that he knew it very well indeed. One of the youths drives a car, wears no hat and dashes in and out of shops as though he had been brought up that way. Mr. Barry one day saw a dusky servant sitting on a bench and beside him sat two boys schooling him in Engâ€" lish, As he passed the Abyssinian said "I see a cat." â€" The exâ€"Emp:ror with . . .
