P Three Series of the â€" New 1938 Chevrolets The new Chevrolets for 1938 are anâ€" nounced toâ€"day from Oshawa in three, seriesâ€"the Master, the Master Special, ard the Master DelLuxe. An advance deâ€" scription of these popular sixes reveals many pleasing changes in appearance and performance. Principal interest centres in mechanical improvements, said to be more numerous this year, than in any year heretofore. Chief of these is a marvellous new clutch, a radical departure from previous years,! ‘"Tiptoeâ€"matic‘ Clutch One of the Special N Touches. Second conly to the clutch in importance is the new starter mechanism, embodying new ease and certainty of starting in any weather. The Master and Master Special Chevroâ€" lets for 1938 come out with a new sysâ€" tem of spring suspension which treâ€" mendously improves roadability, riding comfort and handling. The Master Deâ€" Luxe continues the fullyâ€"enclosed kneeâ€" action which has proved so successful. Production on all series is now well under way at General Motors factories in Oshawa and Regina, it is announced, and the new models will shortly be in dealers‘ showrooms across Canada. _â€" can see to read, who can see the blackboards, may still be struggling hard and not be aware of it. DATUGHTER OF SPEAKER An entirely new design in the backs of the front seats of fiveâ€"passengzer moâ€" dels in all three series marks an adâ€" vance in both safety and convenience. In this connection, engingeers state that the hard portion of the batks of front seats erminates several inches lower than on previous models, and the porâ€" tion above it is softlyâ€"cushioned, miniâ€" mizing the possibility of injury to pasâ€" sengers in case of sudden stops. Greatâ€" er ease of ingress and egress has been achieved also by this change. Upholstery and trim are of finest maâ€" The woman driver in particular will be interested in the more attractive inâ€" strument panel which is also easier to read. Refinements here includs> an i}â€" luminrated ignition â€"lock. sureâ€"grip knobs, flushâ€"type locking knco>s on the glove compartment and firmer grip steering wheel, which can be adjusted to the spckeâ€"position preferred by the drives. The motoring public will note with interest the convenience and utility of the truink mcdels, providing greatly inâ€" creased luggage space. Removal of the flat shelf urder which the spare whsel formerly rested horizcntally gives 6 7â€"8 inches greater hsight, while the comâ€" partment floor has been reâ€"designed to include a well in which the spare wheel can be placed in an â€"almost verâ€" tical position. A rubber mat covers an entirely ‘flat flocr and the top, sides and rear are insulated agairst heat and cold. Just inside the rear edge of the trunk is a convenient tool compartâ€" ment.: Departures related to units in the electrical system include the new starting mechanism similar to that feaâ€" tured on costlier General Motors cars. It has an overâ€"running clutch and auâ€" tomatic throttle advance, assuring easy, positive starts. There is also a new weatherâ€"tight, and accessible battery mounting. Widening of the rear tread from 57 9â€"16 inches to a full 59 inches has provided more body space and increased stability on the road. Quieter operation over any type of road has been achieved by an innovation in the method of atâ€" taching the rear springs to the rear axle housing. Bushings and washers of resilient rubber in conjunction with a new bracket welded to the front of the housing on each side provide complete insulation betweer the springs and the housing. Engineers have also given atâ€" tention to the elimination of metalâ€"toâ€" metal contacts and the transfer of road noises to the interior of the car. Thus, there is no lorger any necessity for adjustment, lubrication or service of any kind at this point. In the case of the engine, advances are principally in the nature of reâ€" firements. Engineers point cut, howâ€" ever, that a new and lighter flywheel, in conjunction with the new clutch, affords greater flexibility and quicker response to the controls, and valveâ€" springs, valves and certain portions of the cooling system have been reâ€"deâ€" signed rather than simply refined. There is a faster transfer of heat from the combustion chambers, especially in the vicinity of the valves. Advanced styling, which enhances the exterior appearance of the new cars, is emphasized at the front end. Sweeping forward from the cowl in a graceful curve, the top of the hood meets an almost vertical, flatâ€"topped radiator and grille. The latter, which is an arâ€" resting departure from last year‘s deâ€" sign, consists of chromiumâ€"plated horiâ€" zontal bars. ficwing back from the cenâ€" tre line of the grille to blend into the radiator shell. The attractiveness of these lines is accentuated by the fact that every fifth bar is of double width and pinâ€"striped down the centre with vermillion enamel. Introduced in 1937, the speedline which imparts a racy dash to the style is again featured this ytar. The combined effect of these many reâ€" finements is one of greater length and racier, more graceful lines. . Bodies, both interiors and exteriors and chassis units reveal systematic reâ€" finement of features which already have been proved by Chevrolet owners. The public is already familiar with the 85â€"horsepower highâ€"compression, valveâ€" inâ€"head, sixâ€"cylinder engine. Widely acclaimed for its power, smoothness, economy and freedom from service inâ€" terruptions, this power plant is to be found in both series. Again offered on all the new models are features which have contributed to Chevrolet‘s sales leadership in the lowâ€"price field such as perfected hyâ€" draulic brakes, allâ€"silent allâ€"steel Turâ€" ret Top bodies by Fisher and the troubleâ€"free hypoid rear axles introâ€" duced in 1937. and craftsmanship. Messrs Slade and Cunningâ€" ham were not at the convention for the purpose of boosting these Northern towns commercially, nor pointing out their amazing progress, but, let me reâ€" peat. they were there for the particular business of emphasizing the need spiritually, because they do believe in It goes without controversy that the men and women of the North Country possess all the sterling qualities ascribâ€" ed to them by those who have thought it necessary to arise in their defence, but the fact remains that they, as all men and women everywhere, still need to yield themselves to the Lord so that He may fulfill His pronfiseâ€""I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and will give them a heart of flesh." (Ezek. 11:19). A man may be natiurally the tenderest and most generous of men, and yet be ilyliï¬'erent, and hard toward God. I do not need to point out that were the majority of the people of this community tender hearted toward God the churches would be a lhundred fold too small to contain them. Reports of meetinigs can be misleadâ€" ing, as for instance the report in your issue of Tuesday last wherein it was stated "As the Timmins speaker, Mr. Hicks, did not turn up during the day, the evening meeting was not held. A congregation of four tiurn out to sing hymns." Now, as a matter of fact, Mr. Hicks did arrive from Timmins, and did preach to a gathering of thirty to forty people. This is an example of what probably occurred at the convention in Toronto,; the reporters there failing to detect that the speaker, when using the terms "harder than rocks," was referâ€" ing to man‘s relation to God and not to his fellowman. Before submitting any statement to the local paper the friends of the Reâ€" glular Baptist Church have been awaitâ€" ing the return of the Rev. Messrs Cunâ€" ningham and Slade from Toronto, in order to learn what did actually tranâ€" spire there. Last Thursday The Advance pubâ€" lished letters condemning statements alleged to have been made at the conâ€" vention of the Union of Regular Bapâ€" tist Churches at Toronto recently. These letters included one published in The Northern News, of Kirkland Lake. Accordingly it is only fair that the following reply, published in The Northern News last Friday should also be given publicity:â€" To the Editor, ' The Northern News: velvet is used in the Master Series, with grey cloth or blue grey mohair velvet in the Master Special series. Order toâ€"day Put policemen have hearts, sometimes big cnes, and the plight of the young man called for sympathy. He was liberâ€" ated in the morning, no charge was laid. and word coming through from Cobalt that his club bazg and money had been put off at the station there, he was taken to Cobalt by the officers, and put on a homewardâ€"bound train rejoicing, sadder and, let it be hoped, wiscy. Apparertly he had some money, how much is not known, and, in his conâ€" dition, his friends tcok the money, or so he thought, and in his endeavour to get it back a fight resulted. Now a fight on the street is not so bad, but when it cecurs on a passerger train it calls for police action and so the officers were summoned to take the young man off, which they did at the station here. He was locked up, and at last realizing his position, his distress was acute. His trunk had been checked, his club bag was on the train, and his mother was expecting him the fcllowing morning. North â€" Bay Nugzet:â€"The Detroit News avers Great Britain now realizes her mistake. She should never have fallen into the way of murmuring "Sure, sure," to any upstart who said he was Napoleon. Note:â€"A Northern News reporter who attended the Regular Baptist Church on Sunday evening was told by a lady of the congregation that Mr. Hicks of Timimins, who was listed ~for the pulpit for the evening, had not turned up and that there would not be a service held. The informant exâ€" pressed the idea that the evening would likely be spent singing hymns. Since no sermon was to be given, the Northern News representative took his leave. Only six persons were present when he left at about 7.50 p.m.â€"â€"Editor Northern News. But he celebrated, not wisely but too well, and, on the southbound T. N. O. passenger train on Tuesday night, with his baggage checked for a distant city, he became a little boisterous. Police Gave Boisterous Young Man Second Chance Kirkland Lake, Oct. 28, 1937. Again let me invite your readers to a wider attitude and a deeper underâ€" standing of the whole matter, for this incident which is only a part has been so misunderstood as to create antogâ€" onism and unjustice. It is quite conceivable that if these men were missionaries say in the city of Toronto, and seeking to arouse inâ€" terest, they would refer to sin as they found it as that of Sodom and Gomâ€" orrah, and the condition of the people‘s hearts as "harder than rocks," and the recent audience at the convention, and Christian people generally, would apâ€" preciate their purpose in so speaking. For the Scriptures confirm this same thing in Romans 3, and Timothy 3, to which I would cordially commended atâ€" tention. Purther, they are not here to make their fortune as speedily as possible and then depart to some more saluâ€" brious clime, but they are here to bring blessing and comfort to the lives, and share in the hardships, of those in the midst of a brave struggle to make good. God‘s power to use the tremendous possibilities and merits of this north land to which they are giving their lives with unselfish devotion. Yours truly, J" Phones 8$80â€"1890 E. O. Daniel
