During 1936 an average of twelve new mining companies and syndicates comâ€" menced operation every week in Canâ€" ada; nearly 100 older organizations, many of which had been dormant for years, ware revived ard resumed explorâ€" ation‘! Thirty or more mines entered the ranks of producers and eleven comâ€" panies made initial dividend payments. Indicative of this tremendous increase in minirg activity, the Canadian Mines Handbook for 1937, which has just been issued, is much larger than any preâ€" vious edition, running to 383 pages and tréating 44,714 companies, as compared with 3,744 last year and 2724 in 1934. The Handbook shows 1281 active operating mining companies in the Dominion at the end of 1937. This was after the strict elimination of companâ€" ies which were not active in the year. Summed up: 592 new companies were operatirg and 89 old ones were revived. a total of 681. During the year two or three hundred companies dropped out of the operating race and were demoted to Part II. or the supplementary list contained two seoare companies which were organized late in 1936 or early in 1937 and were getting ready to work. There figures illustrate the fact well appreciated by mining reporters and statisticians, that mining is in a conâ€" stant state of flux. Companies are con. stantly coming and going; fortunately, they are mostly coming. As usual, the Handbook reviews the operating companies in considerable de. tail. Head office, and mine office adâ€" dresses, names of directors and chief operating officials, capitalization, proâ€" perty locations and activities are given. Where reâ€"organization has taken place the share exchange basis is provided when possible. The book tells what has become of companies which have passed out of current knowledge, and is thereâ€" fore espccially useful to those who wish Much Information in New Issue of Mines Handbook To date been done level and about $10 of cre ma new ore, whnile at t shift is being used drift further north first level.
