Word from Toronto this week is to the effect that while the department of northern development is concluding an extensive programme of arterial roadwok which will povide employmantj in every district cf the north, there are many indications that Hon. Peter Heeâ€"| nan will have considerable difficulty in getting cabinet approval. With tenders: called for almost $3,000,000 worth of exâ€" [ penditure almost all of which is on transâ€"Canada â€" highway construction, several of Mr. Heenan‘s colleagues and} possibly Premier Hepburn are showing signs of balking at added expenditures. Many Liberal members from Southern Ontario are making discreet objections to the huge expenditures in the north which Mr. Heenan already has under way. Highway work in the south has been curtailed by Hon. T. B. McQuesten, minister of highwi#ys, to such an extent that in about 40 Liberal ridings less than $1,000 will be spent. HEN our first Vancouver office was opened in 1895 British Columbia seemed hardly a part of Canada it was so far beyond the vision of most Easterners. Canada‘s westernmost province now produces the bulk of our lumber, oneâ€"third of the minerals and oneâ€" half the fish, while the City of Vancouver in point of population has grown to third place in the Dominion. If you have business in British Columbia, we can serve you. IMPERIAL BANK OF CANADA British Columbia was once a farâ€"off land ro TORONTO ano Doctor: "But why make such moâ€" tions" Patient: "Well, if you know any other way for a man to get on his overcoat, I wish yvou‘d let me know." Patient: ‘"Doctor, I‘m bothered with a queer pain. When I bend forward, stretch out my arms and make a semiâ€" circular movement with them, a sharp sting comes in my left shoulder." One feature that shsould be emphasizâ€" ed is the bad condition of existing roads in the north. In a number of places the roads are reported as actuâ€" ally unsafe, while practically all the workers are now off the roads. Unless something is done to maintain the roads the cost of bringing them back to proper condition will be very seriousâ€" much greater indeed than the small amount that is supposed to be saved by stopping work and paying so much more out in relief. This powder should be scattered or dusted lightly in places frequented by the ants and left undisturbed until the insects have disappeared. As sodium fluoride is somewhat poisonous care should be taken to prevent children or pets from gaining access to it. Ants are social in their habits, and live together in colonies. The majority of the ants in a colony and the ones most commonly seen, are wingless unâ€" developed female workers, which are incapable of reproducing their kind. Each colony also possesses one or more true females or "queens‘" which are reâ€" sponsible for the generation of new individuals. The white, helpless, larvae and p»upae which develop from eggs laid by the "queen" are cared for by the workers which may be seen transâ€" porting them to a place of safety when the nest is threatened with danger. Ants which enter dwellings will feed on many kinds of foodstuffs, but are particularly fond of sweet and fatty substances. Dept. of Agriculture Gives Plan to Combat Summer Cottage Pest of Ants. And what wonders that does for your spirits angq your beauty as well. What a favourable reâ€" action it wins from those around you too. It‘s the tried and trueâ€"smile and the world smiles with you. Poise and Posture Perfect posture and beauty are an inseparable combination. In the matter of posture that little word pops up again. The whole secret of graceful, beautiful carriage is "up." Stand up, That is why we must first think "up" in order to look it. Given a good fcundation of health, please value it as the most precious possession, the greatest beauty asset you can have. Keep it "up." Lacking perfect health, let a physician help you find out what you need to ‘build it "up." We must all agree that our thoughts are closely related to our looks. What we think etches tellâ€"tale lines in our faces. Our expression mirrors our moods and our thoughts, try as hard as we sometimes do to conceal them. A woman given to moods of melanâ€" cholia cannot possibly look bright and cheerful. Even if she feigns laughter it is fortced, ang if she tries to act or look gay an inner light or rather the lack of it tells the world that she is insincere. Her eyes fail to light "up" and her mouth corners fail to turn "up.‘"" That little word "up"â€"have you ever stopped to think how important it is in the language of beauty? Practically everything we do, or rather everything we should do for beauty‘s sake is "up."
