Douglas A. Mutch, min‘ng engineer with 28 years‘ experience in Northern Ontario, told J. M. Godrey, K.C. as the Ontario Securities Commissioner reâ€" sumed his inquiry into charges that unjustified expenditures if shareholdâ€" ers‘ money had been made at the mine. There was proven ore on two levels, but nothing to justify a 150â€"ton mill. Mr. Mutch repeated. He thought a 40 to 50â€"ton mill would have been justiâ€" fied. based on character of the ore shown and the results obtained on adâ€" joining property. Electrification of the plant for unâ€" derground development, he held, was justified and should have been followâ€" ed by erection of a 50â€"ton mill. The cost he estimated at $35,000 as comparâ€" ed with $126,000 for the $150â€"ton mill actually erected. "Can you see any possible justificaâ€" tion for the expenditure of $126,000?" Commissioner Godfrey asked. "None," Mr. Mutch said. The present mill could be put in operation economically as a 50â€"tin mill, by the expenditure of $5,000, Mr. Mutch believed. and he declared he was satisâ€" fied that with capital of $10,000 work at the mine could be resumed at once. When the Thompsonâ€"Cadillac Co. went into voluntary bankruptcy and closed down the property last month. Mr. Mutch said he visiteq the mine and at that time he wrote that the property and district had been given an "unwarâ€" ranted black eye." The decision to close down the mine and liquidate the company, he helqd in his report to have been "hasty" and made after "only a cursory" examinaâ€" tion of the property. Tj mine profitably at Thompsonâ€" Cadillac, Mr. Mucth said that the ore to be milled should be carefully selectâ€" ad angq assorted. Such sort:ng would increase the average grade to from #15 to $20 per ton, he said. Careful mining and sorting would certainly justify a 50â€"ton mill, he reâ€" ported. such a mill would have produced gold which would have gone a long way toward meeting the cost of additional development, which was necessary, he said. pointed out. Mr. Mutch thought tha tion that there was not to feed a 150â€"ton mill mig Cranberries, "It might discourage you because yOu knew all about it. But the public did not know the ore wasn‘t blocked and it‘s natural they should be impressed by a big mill," Mr. Godfrey said." Daniel Lang. K.C., counsel for Canâ€" adian Enterprises, Ltd., sought to show that when the company recommended a i150â€"ton mill there were assurances from the property that there was twoâ€" vear‘s ore in sight to feed the mill.
