Several new fires are reported toâ€"day. One in Parkinson is burning over a cut, two small fires started in Striker townâ€" ship and other fires were burning in several organized townships. A heavy pall of smoke hangs over the whole disâ€" trict toâ€"day, making visibility for the air patrol and toviers almost negligible. Five incendiary blazes, all close toâ€" gether and being held by rangers, were started in Aberdeen township, and several blazes attributed to bush fireâ€" bugs have started near Lake Lauzon in the Blind River area. Already 1,000 acres have been burned over. "We have stopped and controlled this fire on several occasions," Chief Forâ€" ester N. M. Kensit said toâ€"day. "But it invariably breaks out again beyond the fire lines. We had it stopped at the east end yesterday, and last night someone started another fire half a mile beyond it in the bush. Steps are being taken to secure convictions," he said.. A series of serious incendiary fires, in addition to many bush conflagraâ€" tions, is adding to the worries of the forestry branch at Sault Ste. Marie. As announced at the cpening of the Canadian Chautauquas at Timmins last week this excellent form of entertainâ€" ment will not be available at Timmins next year, the present conditions makâ€" ing it necessary to avoid sections where there is tco large a distance between towns and where it is difficut to present the Chautauquas without a deficit However, though the North will not be visited next year by the Chautauquas and Timmins will accordingly miss this event, it has been definitely decided to have the Chautauquas here the followâ€" ing year, 1935. Before the Chautauâ€" quas superintendent, Miss Grover, left Timmins this week she had signed up a sufficient number of sponsors to guarantee the visit of the Chautauâ€" quas to Timmins in 1935. It may be a long time to look forward but many here with whom the Chautauquas are popular will be keenly interested and pleased to know that even théugh next year is missed the Chautauquas will be here the following year. Trouble in Sault District With Incendiary Bush Fires There were six charged with the orâ€" dinary everyday drunkenness, Five of them were assessed $10.00 and costs. The sixth man was fined $25.0G and costs for drinking in a public place. One of the drunks by odd coincidence had the same name as one of the town councillors but he wasn‘t a town counâ€" cillor nor any relation to any town councillor so far as could be learned, but the councillor may expect to hear considerable "kidding‘" about the simiâ€" larity of names. Chautauquas to be Here Again Year After Next Six speeders were each fined $10.00 and costs. Another speeding charge was withdrawn. A man living on Spruce street, south, was charged with assaulting an acâ€" quaintance. The latter is still in the hospital so the case was adjourned for a week. The magistrate dismissed the charge aga‘nst a Balsam street man accused of failing to provide for his wife and family. Six Months Term for Breach of Morality of highâ€"grading. He was arrested last week, and Sergt. Craik and Special Officer R. Allen are said to have found about four pounds of gold ore in his possession. He pleaded not gullty and clected to be tried by the magistrate. He was remanded to next week, being allowed out on $2500.00 bail. A charge of theft against a local man was withdrawn by the complainant with costs paid. A common assault case was remandâ€" ed to next week. Another common asâ€" sault case was withdrawn. A woman accused her husband of common assault but the case was disâ€" missed after the evidence in the case showed that she had used a broom handle on her husband. Caufield !-.\lclntyre Repo to \ _ Transferred to Kirkland| Have Good Find in Denves In the official report sent in to Inâ€" spector Creasy at Haileybury headâ€" quarters of the provincial police, Conâ€" stable Wesley McCord, states that Gardner, the driver of the car meeting with an accident on Wednesday last near Matheson, claims that the nerâ€" vousness cf the passenger in his car really caused the serious accident. A tire blew out on the machine but Gardâ€" ner says, according to the police report, that he was getting the car under conâ€" trol and would have been able to keep the car on the road until it stopped, but the passenger, A. J. Martin, beâ€" came nervous. He shouted and grabâ€" bed Gardner‘s arm, forcing the car to the right where it upset. Gardner had picked up Martin on the road neat Ramore and was giving him a ride to Timmins when the accident occurred, As noted in The Advance last week Martin was so seriously injured in the accident that he died in Matheson hosâ€" pital a few hours afterwards. Gardâ€" ner, the driver of the car, lives on Maple street, Timmins. He was driv ing a car owned by Wm. Boychuk, o Timmins. Martin was on his way Timmins in the hopes of getting work at his trade as a barber. He h letter to a local barber from a friend in Cochrane and it was through, this friend that Martin was idenytfled. When the car took the ditch both men were rendered unconscious. Gaktdner recovered his senses to find Martin under the automobile, sericously hu A passing truck took Martin to Matheâ€" son hosp.tal where ‘he died within four hours. Gardner had one bone in his left hand broken and suffered bruises to leg and head. Correspondence Course Pupils Pass the Entrance "It takes years to develop," Dr. Ranâ€" ger said. "A man must be exposed to silica dust for 12 to 14 years before he enter an anteâ€"primary stage. But every man who has contracted the diâ€" sease is marked with the red cross of death. Death is certain in 13 years. The results of the medical units have been a great saving in compensation claims to the mining companies. and have resulted in a betterment of workâ€" ing conditions for the employee as preâ€" cautions have been taken to rid the air of at least a certain percentage of the silica content." Passenger‘s Nervousness Helped Cause Accident From The Sudbury Star) The strict medical examination of all mine workers in Ontario is reducing silicosis, the most important of occuâ€" pational diseases, caused by the infilâ€" tration of silica dust in the air breathâ€" ed by the workman, and is cutting down the huge claims made yearly on the companies. There is so much exaâ€" mination is Quebec as yet, and many unsuccessful applicants for jobs in Onâ€" tario are flocking to work in Quebec mines because of this, Dr. Lucien Ranâ€" ger, of the Ste. Jeanne d‘Are Hospital, told members of the Progress Club of Montreal. Not only miners, but street cleaners, grinders, sand blasters, and many other operatives suffer from this lung disease, he said. Numerous cases had been found among the employees of a lawnâ€" mower factory in Ontario. It was only through the fight made by the units established at Porcupine, Kirkâ€" land Lake and Sudbury that the raâ€" vages of silicosis were being checked. There will be very general regret aâ€" mongâ€"all classes and sections in T.mâ€" mins at the departure of Rev. Father Caufield. During the time he has been in town Rev. Fr. Caufield has won the circles of friends by his kindness, geniâ€" allty and sincerity and his helpful spirit in anything and everything for the benefit of the community, Rev. PFr. Rev. Fr. Caufield was a valued member of the Kiwanis Club here and was active and helpful in other circles in town. He was a member of the Timmins Relief Pund committee and in this capacity gave very generously of h:is and talent for the advantage of the people. He appeared to make friends wherever known and he deaves behind him in Timmins very wide circles of friends, young and old, who wish him all sucâ€" cess and happiness in his new duties. Â¥. Fr. Another count is registered: against the police dog to add to the numerous black marks registered against this species of dog during the past few months. . Apparently the police dog is very much the same type of animal as the little girl in the nursery rhymewho "when she was good was very very good, but when she was bad she was horrid.‘"* The police dog is the kindest and ‘most dependable of dogs, to listen to the.ownâ€" er of one. To read the list of policeâ€"dogs condemned for being vicious is to think the breed "very very horrid." The est black mark against the police dog is told in the following despatch from Sudbury this week:â€""Dashing wilgdly among about 100 children and adults at Bell Park, on Lake Ramsey, Sunâ€" day, a police dog attacked Alex Barâ€" ton, 16, of 366 Marion street, biting his hand and arm seriously.
