"The Jolly Miller," quadrilles, and other oldâ€" time and modern dances were enjoyed during the evening. Teéen years ago The Advance noted that "Mother‘s Day," Sunday May 13th, 1823, was very generally cbserved in T‘immins and district. There was a special meeting ¢of the town council ten years ago to deal with road problems. The council decided upon the purchase of a road oller, % grader and two dump wagons as par of the necessary equipment to carry cut the plans of the town engineer for rcad improvement. "Mr. Murdock, the new town engineer," said The Advance, "has worked out a programme for the doing away with the dust menace. His Nev grant had been legally made. If it were legal it should be paid. Councilâ€" lor Sullivan asked as to whether or not Cochrane people were in need of help. The mayor replied that he had comâ€" municated with the mayor of Cochrane and had been told that no help was needed then except in the matter of nurses. Since then the Red Cross had taken cver the whole situation and were looking after Cochrane‘s needs. Bro. A. Tomkinson, of South Forcuâ€" pine, was selected as D.D.G.M. by the District Meeting of Cochrane District No. 59, 1.0.OF., held at Timmins on May 10th, 1923,. His term commenced June 1st that year. plan is to oil the streets on the same method as successfully used in Southâ€" ern Ontario towns and cities. A special grade of cil is used ard applied under special conditions," The chief topic of discussion at the meeting of the Timmins board of trade on May 14th, 1923, was the matter of the site of the Fesserton Timber Co.‘s proposed new mill here. The Fesserâ€" ton Co. asked the board of trade to reâ€" ccmmend a site near the town pumpâ€" house, and Mr. Carter, president of the company, was present and outlined the history of the agreements between the Fesserton CoO., the Pierce Lumber Co. and the town. He minimized the dangâ€" er of fire, referring to Sarnia, Midland, Pembrcoke, Owen Sound and other places as having lumber industries right in their midst. He said the company was to spend $100,000.00 in construction, and there would be 100 to 125 men at the plant, with 200 or 300 in the bush. D. Ostrosser, Councillor L. S. Newton, of the town police, as officers for the enforcement of O.T.A. A new building byâ€"law was also under consideration but was to be dealt with at a later meeting. J. W. Faithful, secretary of the Grounds Committee, spoke to counâ€" cil in reference to benefit to the town of the athletic grounds. He also asked why the grant given the year before icr the building of the grandstands had been withheld. Mayor Dr. McInnis said there was a question whether the grant had been legally made. If it were legal it should be paid. Councilâ€" At the regular meeting of the town council ten years ago byâ€"laws were passed:â€"appointing C. R. Murdock as town engineer;â€"creating a high school district in connection with the proposâ€" ed high school for Timmins; appointing Officers R. Gratton and W. Parcher, areas, these places all having suffered disastrous fires that though perhaps not started in the lumber were certainâ€" ly fed by the piles. Councillor Walâ€" lingford suggested that ‘the board of trade coâ€"operate with the town counâ€" cil in securing another site for the Fesâ€" serton mill. A motion favouring the site at the pumphouse was defeated, and an amendment to the effect that the board of trade coâ€"Operate with the council in securing another site was carried by a vote of 11 to 3. thers. It is the avowed purpose of The Teleâ€" grame to present the facts about this town and district to the people of the Ssouth, so that a more intelligent an1? accurate idea may be entertained of this camp, its prospects, possibilities and progress. To which purpose all here will say:â€"More power to your elâ€" bow." "Miss Myrtle Gauthier, of Iroâ€" quois Falls, spent the weekâ€"end the guest of friends in Timmins." "W. Dunsmore, who has been a resident of Timmins for a cauple of years past, left this week for a three months‘ visit to his old home in Seotland." "A readâ€" er of The Advance suggests that the Porcupine Motor League can do much this year in the interests of the many motorists of the district. The Parcuâ€" pine Motor League was organized last year and got away to a good start, but the individual motorists did not continue their interest, but left everything apâ€" parently on the shoulders of the offiâ€" cers appointed. There is a big field of usefulness for the Motor League here, but the whole burden can not be left on the shsulders of one or two, but for success and benefit there must be active interest and coâ€"operation on the part of all motorists. If all the motorâ€" ists in the district will give their interâ€" ost and coâ€"operation the Motor League can do much in the way of securing better roads and protecting the public, as well as the motorists in many ways." Three Deer Noticed by Motorist on the Highway With the announcement made some weeks ago that despite the fact that three million dollars had been voted by the Legislature for Northern Developâ€" ment Dept. work, there was no money this year for the maintenance of the roads of the North, it will be more than usually difficult to persuade tourists to come to this country this year. Conâ€" 4885448484444 8 4443484444 4L4 * * S 4 4 * 4 4 4 *4 t a 80 deer. sequently it will be necessary to specialâ€" ly emphasize the attractions of the North so that all of the money left by motorists may not be lost. In recent vears the amount coming to the North from the tourist trade is certainly "not to be sneszed at,"‘ as some of the cribs players used to say. Despite the fact that only a small proportion of the tourists would come very far north in view of the fact that they had to travel south by the exactly same route as they came north, there have been many acceptable dollars left in the North in the last few years by tourists. As £ 20â€"21 £ s\\\\\\\\%%‘%\%‘%fi% 44 %%S%%%%%S‘ consequence the tourist trade is well worth considering. One of the points that may be emphasized in seeking to attract tourists is the presence in this country of game and other native anlâ€" mals.
