From reference in The Nortkhorn News last week, it seems that there is a lot of alcohol in circulation also in the Kirkland district and Magistrate Atâ€" kinson gave warning against this sort af breach of the law. "If it continues," he said, "I‘m going to double the fines in cases of this kind." Those guilty will find that the magistrate makes no idle threats and that he understands his business perfectly. It may be recalled that a year or two ago there was a regular epidemic of common drunks at the Kirkland Lake police court. The magistrate called attention to the numâ€" ber of drunk cases. ‘If it doesn‘t stop" he said, ‘I‘m going to double the fines in such cases. It did not materially deâ€" crease for a week or two. The magisâ€" trate doubled the fines for drunkenâ€" ness at Kirkland, and the result was surprising. Almost at once the growâ€" ing list of drunk charges each week began to decrease and soon there were few drunk cases indeed at the Kirkland police court. MAGISTRATE FORECASTS BIGGER FINES FOR "ALKI ing. The winners were:â€"ladies, firs Mrs. J. Chatson; second, Mrs. Wn Hughes; men‘s, first, M. Charlebo‘is second, Mr. J. Besley.
