The fall of snow and sand was first noticed early in the evening when it was seen that the newlyâ€"fallen snow had a distinct brownâ€" ‘1sh tinge. The most of places have to lbc content with a white snow and Kirkâ€" .land Lake felt it was distinctive and .odd in that it had the brownish kind. \Uno Park Man Got Lost and \ _ So Found Team of Horses Kirkland Lake people thought they had something odd and unusual and worthy of space in the despatches when snow and sand fell intermingled givâ€" ing the landscape brownish tinge. The metcorological fellows at Toronto, however, said "Pooh! Pooh!" The scientific gentlemen said it was not unusual at all, so if anyone sees a fall of snow and fine sand hereafter at Kirkland Lake they can take it as a matter of course. Residents of Kirkland Lake and Swastika are said to have been amazed on waking on Thursday morning last to find a light covering of fine powdery sand over everything in sight. If they were amazed, they also appeared to be pleased at the thought that they had something new and unusual, something that other towns and districts could not boast. Also they appeared to have more or less of a mystery. No one at Kirkland Lake or Swastika could figure out where sand in large enough quanâ€" tites to create the peculiar combination before them could be found anywhere in the district or in the whole North Land at this time of year. There was naturally much discussion and even more question about the phenomenal snowâ€"sand fall. Most of the citizens would have denied the matter let it go at that, only there was the snow and sand intermingled before them to prove that such a fall had been. One Kirkâ€" land Lake man when pressed for the reason for this odd snowfall is quoted as responding:â€""Oh, it‘s snow matter‘!" Of course, the whole affair got into the press despatches and that led to the spoiling of the whole situation. Officials of the meteorological office at Toronto were asked about this fail of snow and sand. They said there was really "nothing unusuall" about the fall of fine sand mixed with light â€"snow. According to the meteorological gentleâ€" men this sort of think happens quite frequently. The explanation they gave was to the effect that the sand was whipped in the air, whipped high up they add. It might be as much as thousand miles from Kirkland Lake that this whipping high up into the air of the sand took place. Once high up in the air the sand would be carâ€" ried along in the air currents. It was apparently carried along to the Kirkâ€" land Lake area, and then when snow or rain formed, the sand was forced down. And there you are! Or, rather, there the sand and snow are! People at Kirkland Lake Think They have Something Unusual but Meteorological Gents at Toâ€" ronto Say it‘s Not Unusual. wherefores of the accident The Northern News last week says:â€" "Noranda Mines must be a popular place to work. In the last year the company had 15,000 applications from people seeking jobs. The company emâ€" ploys at Noranda, Quebec, in its mine, smelter and mill, 1,485 men, the largest in its historyâ€"a real contribution to the employment situation in Quebec and to the stability of industrial conditions in Canada.
